Billionaire investor Bill Ackman vowed on Wednesday to provide “hundreds of millions of dollars” to back any viable challenger against Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral race.
Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s Democratic primary on Tuesday and will compete against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams (running as an independent this cycle) and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa in the November general election.
Ackman, founder and chief executive of hedge fund manager Pershing Square Capital, wrote a lengthy post on X to express his alarm at Mamdani’s victory.
“I awoke this morning gravely concerned about New York City,” Ackman wrote. “I thought ‘What has NYC become that an avowed socialist who has supported defunding the police, whose solution to lowering food prices is city-owned supermarkets, who doesn’t understand that freezing rents will only make apartments scarcer and more expensive in the long run.'”
The billionaire investor compared a potential Mamdani-led New York to “another failed major city run by Democrats alongside Seattle, Chicago, LA, and SF,” quoting Senator John Fetterman’s (D-PA) assessment that Mamdani’s victory represented “Christmas in July for the GOP.”
“A mayor who disrespects the NYPD and has called for their defunding will get less effective policing, and Bratton’s ‘broken window theory’ will operate in reverse,” Ackman wrote, warning that New York City would become “much more dangerous and economically unviable” under Mamdani’s administration.
Ackman assured potential candidates that funding would be instantly available, stating, “there are hundreds of million of dollars of capital available to back a competitor to Mamdani that can be put together overnight,” and adding that he is “in the text strings and the WhatsApp groups” organizing the effort.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Unless he has something of insight to share, this is better done behind the scenes 🙄Zohran’s whole schtick is that he’s not bankrolled.
Do they have to return the money if they lose?
Lol.
What other free stuff can another candidate offer? It’s going to be hard to out-freebie Zoltan.
TS buddy, just get the hell out. NY is a lost cause. Don’t waste your money.
I thought billionaires became billionaires from cunningly smart investments.
EMBRACE THE SUCK YOU CREATED!
Right. The idiots in DC say the Trump restoration of expiring tax cuts “give tax cuts to his billionaire friends.”
Socialists repeat “You can’t pay for your medical bills or pay for food but Trump’s billionaire supporters are getting richer.” And even trashed Elon for “profiting” from Trump while they burned Teslas and dealerships and took down the sales of Teslas in their boycotts. Some profit stream.
No blushing over Mark Cuban, Gates or Soros and sons being rich and the foundation of Dem war chests for victories for years.
Unfortunately, at this point, Eric Adams is the only viable candidate.
Ackman says “back any viable challenger” as if it’s all a big mystery to him or some unknown white knight will suddenly appear from the woodwork ... so, Bill, i’ve got a tip for you: Eric Adams is the ONLY viable alternative to the commie ...
The muslims won NY. What they started on 9/11 will be finished this year.
The way I read it the bankroll comes after winning the election
What about Curtis Sliwa?
Zoltan? He ain’t Hungarian!
Pay Adams to drop out.
Tony Weiner standing at full attention!
Sliwa, sadly, doesn’t have a chance and of those who could defeat this Maoist the least repugnant is Mayor Adams.
How do you know if someone can beat Zohran until he does - or doesn’t...
Yeah—Ackman might want to spend a few of those millions on a good crystal ball!
I like Sliwa, but I don’t think he’s ever gotten any traction.
