Isreal has been continuously occupied by Sephardic Jews for about 4500 years. But yes, a lot of Russian Jews resettled to Isreal.

I would also say that after what happened in Syria he would prefer to back a winner.

Putin also has a big Islamic population problem. Muslim go radical in ways that Jews do not.
