it is interesting that the promise you mention was made to Abraham, not to Israel. God Himself used other nations to punish Israel and Judah for their apostasy throughout their history. It seems to me that the promise made here isn’t as much about the political/worldly nation of Israel as it is about Abraham’s faith, by which he was reckoned as righteous. There are Jews who don’t believe or love anything that Abraham did. And there are non-Jews who do.
Abraham had two sons: Isaac and Ishmael. If blessing Abraham means always siding with Abraham’s physical descendants, we have a problem, because the descendants of those 2 sons are at war with each other.

You have to look at the “totality of the circumstances” to see what’s true. Iraq was never a threat to America or the world. Saddam Hussein didn’t even adhere to Islam. He was mainly interested in personal political gain.

I know this is an aside, but I want to distinguish the difference between Abraham’s 2 sons. Ishmael was the result of Sarah deciding that God wasn’t able to keep His promise of giving Abraham descendants as many as the stars. She didn’t believe God was able to do the job so she took it upon herself to do the job for him. She had her servant sleep with Abraham to create a descendant for Abraham: Ishmael. Ishmael resulted from a LACK of faith in God and His promise.
Israel was born after Sarah laughed at the angel of the Lord’s promise that she would have a son by the same time next year. In spite of her disbelief, God did what He had promised long before and gave Abraham a miracle child. He was the child of Abraham’s faith, given solely by the One in whom Abraham believed.
When Sarah and Hagar battled each other and Sarah sent Hagar away with Ishmael, God told Abraham not to sweat it too badly because it was through Isaac that his sons would be reckoned, but God would Himself make a great nation from Ishmael.
Later, God reaffirmed His promise to Abraham of having descendants as numerous as the stars - and adds that through Abraham’s offspring all nations would be blessed. God said that He would do that because Abraham did not withhold even his only son, but was willing to offer him as a sacrifice when God told him to do so. God provided a ram caught by its horns in the thicket to take the place of Isaac on the altar, on the mount in Jerusalem. Abraham had a son by Sarah’s will who was sent away but God refers to Abraham’s son of God’s promise alone - Isaac - as Abraham’s only son.
Those who are merely physical descendants of Abraham - children not of the promise but only of the flesh - are similar to Ishmael and his clan. God’s blessing of all nations of the world are given through the seed/child of God’s promise. That seed embodies that God is the source of everything good and His Word is sure.
Over the years the apostasy by the Israelites were when many of the Hebrews chose to follow a different god or gods. Specifically they chose to worship gods who demanded of them orgies and child sacrifice, to get the gods into the “mood” of blessing their crops and their own fertility. It was the age-old issue of trusting God alone, or trusting that humans have to do something to trick “god” into being good to them. The question, as always, is whether we have blessings because God is good and trustworthy and wants to bless us, or if we have blessings because we trick God into blessing us against His natural stinginess.
And to this day that is still the age-old issue. Do we get good from God because of something about us - either what genes we have or because of something we have done (pray towards Mecca five times/day, tithe, etc) - or does God bless us simply because He is loving and wants to bless us? Do our hopes rest on ourselves, or do they rest on the goodness of God and the sureness of His promises?
Spiritually, we are all either sons of Ishmael or sons of Israel. Many who are are physical sons of Israel are spiritual sons of Ishmael. Some who are physical sons of Ishmael are spiritual sons of Israel, although it is very difficult for this to be the case because the physical line of Ishmael does a lot of human/political manipulation to force everyone to stay away from faith in the promises, on pain of death.
