On Sunday, Johnson made an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union and told Jake Tapper that there are enough Republicans in the Senate to “stop the process until the President gets serious about the spending reduction and reducing the deficit.”

WATCH:

How many other Republican Senators do you think share your concerns and are willing to work to make major changes to this bill?

I think we have enough to stop the process until the President gets serious about the spending reduction and reducing the deficit.

The bill is as loaded with wasteful spending as ever.

Stephen Miller explains why DOGE cuts are largely absent from the bill:

I’ve seen a few claims making the rounds on the Big Beautiful Bill that require correction.

The first is that it doesn’t “codify the DOGE cuts.” A reconciliation bill, which is a budget bill that passes with 50 votes, is limited by senate rules to “mandatory” spending only — eg Medicaid and Food Stamps. The senate rules prevent it from cutting “discretionary” spending — eg the Department of Education or federal grants. The DOGE cuts are overwhelmingly discretionary, not mandatory. The bill saves more than 1.6 TRILLION in mandatory spending, including the largest-ever welfare reform. A remarkable achievement.

I’ve also seen claims the bill increases the deficit. This lie is based on a CBO accounting gimmick. Income tax rates from the 2017 tax cut are set to expire in September. They were always planned to be permanent. CBO says maintaining *current* rates adds to the deficit, but by definition leaving these income tax rates unchanged cannot add one penny to the deficit. The bill’s spending cuts REDUCE the deficit against the current law baseline, which is the only correct baseline to use.

Another fantastically false claim is that the bill spends trillions of dollars. This is just completely invented out of whole cloth. This is not a ten year budget bill—it doesn’t “fund” almost any operations of government, which are funded in the annual budget bills (which this is not). In other words, if this bill passed, but the annual budget bill did not, there would be no government funding. Under the math that critics are using, if we passed a one paragraph reconciliation bill that cut simply 50 billion in food stamp spending, they would say the bill “added” trillions in spending and debt because they are counting ALL the projected federal spending that exists entirely outside the scope of this legislation, which is of course preposterous. The only funding in the bill is for the President’s border and defense priorities, while enacting a net spending cut of over 1.6 TRILLION dollars.

The bill has two fiscal components: a massive tax cut and a massive spending cut.

And he is correct.

Senators are too stupid to understand that.

“ Looks like he’s been very busy working behind the scenes recruiting no-votes to stop Trump’s agenda. If he succeeds on stopping the bill, you can kiss the midterms goodbye.”

He does NOT WANT TO STOP IT; he wants to MAKE IT SOMEWHAT BETTER (i.e., MORE MAGA in it). Nothing wrong with that,

>>”He does NOT WANT TO STOP IT; he wants to MAKE IT SOMEWHAT BETTER (i.e., MORE MAGA in it). Nothing wrong with that..”

That all depends on how flexible he’s willing to be. This bill is not a personal wish-list for Senator Johnson. If he wants to add some improvements that won’t derail the bill or delay it significantly, then fine. But if he just ignores the compromises that the House just spent the last couple of months putting together and insists on something that will never pass the House or Senate then I’ll have to question his motives.

So far he’s been publicly defiant and even insulting towards President Trump rather than working with his colleagues behind the scenes to make improvements that can actually pass.

BREAKING? Only in the mind of a Gateway Pundit shill. Once again, Gateway Pundit is late to the dance and is repackaging news that was reported by other sources many hours before GP:

The DOJ wouldn’t be accused of blackmail; no personal gain involved and their remit is to prosecute crime.
There are lots of leverage games being played and POTUS understands horse trading. All subtle.
By accusing of blackmail their misdeeds would emerge & destroy them. More importantly it’s not blackmail to charge people for crimes they have committed or expose corruption. Charge 1 or 2 and the rest know the game is up.

“They were always planned to be permanent”. Well, I want them to be permanent but in THE LAW AS IT EXISTS NOW (what budgeting is based upon) the provisions that affect individuals and families will end 12/31/2025 and those provisions revert back to previous law. Just sayin’.

But I think Miller’s point is that those existing tax rates are still being scored as “adding to the deficit”. Even if the Reconciliation bill contained nothing other than making the tax cuts permanent, the bill would be scored as having added to the deficit.

So a significant amount of the “adding to the deficit” is already baked into the cake, and that is misleading because the assumption most people make when they hear that the bill adds to the deficit is that the increase is being caused by new provisions in the bill rather than the result of the existing tax rates.

He SHOULD stop the bill. At least long enough until it can be fixed.

We don't get to run with the Republicans we want, only the RINOs we have. Every tweak will risk dropping someone else in the existing coalition, especially when we have to reconcile with the House.

I give Rand Paul a pass because he is "on brand", and never teamed up with the Dems.

Trump wanted the "Big, Beautiful Bill" rather than a fleet of smaller bills because of the filibuster rule. They will not remove the tight ropes around him. This bill would loosen them a bit.

In any event, the Trump tax fixes have to be made substantially permanent.
