Last year was the main hatch for the two breeds but glad to hear there are “sleepy heads” waking up.
When did you start hearing them this year? You are a few weeks north of me in SW Arkansas. I will be listening thanks to your post.
Last year, I was just outside the zone. There were a few nearby, but the whir of the swarm was miles away, like the UFO engine sound of every 1950’s sci-fi movie.

There was nothing last year, at least in Taylor county. It was a complete bust. Not this year. The woods are full of them, and every now and then one will make it to our porch, where the dog likes to play with them. These are black with a bright orange trim and red eyes.

We started hearing them just a few days ago. They are about 1.5 inches long, btw. Every now and then one lands on my leg or arm and I only notice it when they start nibbling on me, kinda like grasshoppers will do. It starts to hurt a little bit and I brush them off.

Oddly, we’ve never seen a “swarm”. We will occasionally see one flying out of a tree and that’s about it. But if you examine a tree closely and carefully, you can actually see a few on the leaves.
