I confess to being a troglodyte or cave man or idiot or whatever metaphor you'd like to use but I'm very skeptical of AI...
“AI” is essentially computing a large number of connections between chunks of information. To aid in consistency and speed a large number of those connections are pre-calculated and stored.
Because this connection process is analogous to human memory or thinking it is described as “AI” and as systems to do this for general purpose rather than just limited scope/purpose, “genAI”
The major problems are these:
- Like a child, it can make mistakes based on the connections it’s made. The current term for these are “hallucinations” and range from wrong inferences to entirely fictitious information (e.g., lawyers who got in hot water for using AI to provide a brief; the judge was bright enough to know the cases they cited weren’t real)
- Conversely people can tune or ‘train’ the AI to produce more accurate results. It’s not a theory but a known fact that many companies working with AI are leftist and have already been caught out ‘training’ AI to never give answers a leftist might object to — in other words useless ranging to propaganda. (e.g., asking for a joke about Trump; asking for a joke about Biden — those are the mild examples).
- As others noted, the companies offer their services at low or no cost — and like every other ‘free’ tech product YOU are the product being sold. Everything sent to one of these public AIs is now in their model and can be sussed out by others or used by that company for their ends. (e.g., one person above noted policies around AI use; I’ve been involved in isolated topical AI projects to protect data and intellectual property).
- Not incidentally the more they grow and stop being just cute toys, the more resources they require, to the point where tech leaders are trying to start or reactivate nuclear power plants — and *not* so you can make your coffee in the morning without a blackout or have someone drive their EV.
In short very handy; IMO like having a bright kid nearby; and potentially very dangerous both if leftists get their way with these AND if they manage to harm us in the process of trying. Nonetheless everyone should get familiar with what they do and how to recognize “AI”-produced text, sound, and video.
No, it is a search engine
Then call it an Advanced Search Engine and I and others will stop calling it a fraud.
When AI surfaces the entire world will be witness, then horrified.
Oh, I just realized that it makes little difference what you call it. I think it is a potato.
This is merely wrestling with semantics; but, “Artificial Intelligence” seems to be a singular concept rather than an adverb+noun arrangement. Sort of like “Parkay”, an artificial butter.
BRAVO! Finally a clear and questioning thinker on the topic. I agree 100%
Thank you!!!
“AI will be the end of humanity. Look at cell phones. Once a wonderful technology, now a ruler of lives. Scale that by a large and growing factor, and...”
And all you’ve got to do is look at the “elites” that are pushing it. Everyone is behaving and thinking as though this is a “done deal.”
AI has done wonders for cat videos!
Consider the source - you went to Google which is already
leftist biased in multiple ways, try your questions again
on GROK (hint left side of X platform).
And yes, never stop thinking critically in all areas!
