This is incorrect. A REAL ID requires presentation of proof of citizenship. I got my first REAL ID when they were introduced 15 years ago.
I had the option to do an online renewal without a personal visit for a standard DL, but it would not then be acceptable as a "Real ID" where/when required.
Check the links I provided...they all state “Evidence of Lawful Presence”, NOT necessarily citizenship. (for a “Real ID”). I checked CA, TX & TN so far, but I am sure that all states have the same requirements.
It is for Iowa
Every driver license in the USA qualifies as a REAL ID. Your expired driver license from 10 years ago, probably doesn't(A few did though).
Every passport qualifies as a REAL ID.
Every Global Entry Card qualifies as a REAL ID.
There are a ton more IDs that qualify. Your coupon discount card from Piggly Wiggly does not qualify, so if that's all you've got, you're in dutch.
The rise of the illegal alien nation has completely destroyed the value of IZd in our country.
if you are tuned into the fraudulent ID networks you can get a completely new identity complete with a drivers license and a rented or stolen social security number in a week or so for a couple of thousand dollars.
In a matter of weeks you can be receiving welfare via EBTs under multiple fake identities. You also qualify for free health care under the government's medicaid system
You can start a fly by night landscaping or construction business with some of the welfare benefits to supplement your income, buy a truck under your fake ID , pay no insurance or license fees, hire a few other illegals and pay them cash and undercut legit contractors,
When you get caught, you just abandon your truck, close your bank account out and go on to start the process with the next fake identity You get into an accident with an illegal alien or even an American citizen operating under a fake identity. They don't have any insurance so they get a ticket, abandon their vehicle and they just go and get another fake ID and start the process over again -sticking you with the thousand to hundreds of thousand of dollars in repair and medical bills.
I know a family who have a son who was recently hit by a drunk illegal alien with no auto insurance and a false identity. The illegal alien was arrested and let out of jail with no bond and he just up and disappeared after release presumably to get another false ID to live under until he gets into another accident and repeats the process of arrest, getting released on zero bail and moving on to a new identity. The kids family was faced with crushing hospital bills to save the sons life that quickly blew through their auto and health insurance limits. They have went through their life's savings and are selling their home to pay medical bills. It's insane.
In California's LA County illegal aliens and the underground economy are becoming the dominant economy and half of LA Counties 50 billion dollar annual budget is siphoned off in supporting illegal aliens, theft of government funds and welfare fraud of one form or another.
There is a huge, well funded false idenity industry in American due to our illegal alien invasion.
We have so much fake ID out there generating so much fraud that we have to have a new verified ID just to have ID that means anything at all.
Including illegals? Biden’s TSA were literally escorting them to the gates.
Not all driver’s licenses are considered Real IDs. Those states that have motor voter laws, CA,IL, NY, and a host of others do not require a birth certificate as is required in NC, and MO. The DL must have a gold emblem somewhere on the ID. Passports require a birth certificate.
True, in NY you need birth certificate and proof of residency to get real id or for more money the enhanced ID.
Entering a federal building? Already there.
I literally said “most,” meaning not all. Then you come back and say what I posted is incorrect by saying “not all.”
You are arguing just to argue and you are falsely attributing intent to my words that are clearly the opposite of what I said.
For example MD has been in compliance since 2011, that would be 14 years ago.
Also every state has been REAL ID compliant since 2020 compliant and the majority of states have been updating their driver licenses since 2020.
Now explain to me again how my post was incorrect?
Forget it. I don’t need to travel. Not about to take a driver education course to get one or provide original copy of birth certificate. As I recall I did that 55 years ago when I got my original driver’s license.
Or a passport
My daughter is going through this mess right now. Her driver’s license expires next month and for 2 months she has been trying to get an appointment to renew it.
Because she needs Real ID she couldn’t do it online. Well, try and get an appointment..impossible. She finally went to AAA and waited for them to open, explained her problem to the woman checking people in and and was given an appointment for 2 weeks later.
Not if it was issued in one of the banana republic states.
May we just use our passports instead?
May we just use our passports instead?

simply this. Your statement implies that all D/L issued by a compliant state are REAL ID. States can issue D/L to persons that do not/cannot meet the Real ID requirements. The fact that a state can issue Real ID does not meant that all ID issued are REAL ID compliant. For example:
No, a STAR ID is not mandatory in Alabama, but it is required for certain purposes, including domestic air travel and access to some federal facilities. Starting May 7, 2025, individuals will need a STAR ID or another form of acceptable identification, like a passport, to board domestic flights. A STAR ID is Alabama’s version of the federal REAL ID program.
Will the star have to be yellow? asking for a friend.
