Oh I have no doubt. He’s a real piece of work.
You know... I actually saw a KKK rally once complete with a cross burning. In the 70s, arriving back in my Texas town from a trip. It was at the baseball fields at the edge of town. Cross on the pitchers mound.
My sister and I pulled off on the shoulder and watched the spectacle for a few minutes. It was during the time when Vietnamese coat people were arriving and doing well in the shrimp business etc. So they were the flavor of the month that day... but the speaker made massive comments about blacks, Catholics (my grandma on dad’s side was Catholic).
His list was chilling to hear from a loudspeaker... can’t say I enjoyed watching it, but glad I did.
And that was in a time and place when I didn’t even think about race. Honestly, very casual racist stuff was not rare to hear.
But it was jolting to hear it from a public speaker.
KKK guys are straight up un-American.
I’m sorry you experienced that. But unfortunately there are still a lot of racists in the US, and even on this site.
(Frankly, I’ve never understood what the Cross ever had to do with the racism exhibited by the KKK...)
Well, as I said, I am kind of glad I did in retrospect. It was a lesson to see some things spoken from a podium rather than snickering at a joke.
As I said, it was when the Vietnamese boat people were coming in large numbers. You’d come out and find flyers on your windshields at the store etc. That made me just shrug and go on about my day. But stumbling on that scene, was somehow different. Kinda jolted you in a different kind of way.
And my understanding is that the burning cross was “shining the light of Jesus” on the wrongdoer. In their eyes, they were righteous, and the people they were terrorizing was the bad one.
I might stand corrected on that (by some Klan expert!) but that is my understanding.
