Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has announced that effective May 7, 2025, all adult U.S. citizens must present a REAL ID-compliant form of identification or a valid passport to board domestic flights and access federal facilities.
This enforcement marks the culmination of the REAL ID Act, originally passed in 2005 following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations to enhance the integrity and security of state-issued identification documents.
On December 17, 2018, President Trump signed the REAL ID Act Modification for Freely Associated States Act, Public Law 115-323.
“If you plan on traveling, we need your help to prevent delays and to prove your identity. Get a REAL ID. Starting May 7th, you will need a REAL ID to travel by air or to visit federal buildings in the United States,” Noem said in a video statement.
“These IDs keep our country safe because they help prevent fraud and enhance security. Please do your part to protect our country. Go today, and don’t delay.”

Voter registration is at the state level. In Texas all voter registrations are tied to drivers' licenses or state ID's.
Women and children of color being disenfranchised at every turn./s
Need I.D. to enter a post office, but not to vote. smh
Having a “Real ID” is not proof of citizenship...there are states that accept documents to get a Real ID that include “TPS status” (”Temporary Protected Status/”Asylum Seekers” i.e. pretty much all the millions admitted under Biden) an “I-797c” form holder or I-94 VISA holders (overstay your VISA AFTER you get a “Real ID” you terrorists!).

“I just got my new VA ID card. It also works as a Real ID.”
That’s good news. My driver’s license expired in June, OK because I can’t see well enough to drive until I get a corneal transplant this coming June. If it turns out well, I can get another license, but who knows? I am planned to get a WA ID card in the meantime.
“or to visit federal buildings.”
This is a huge problem... This is a National ID. There is no need for and should not be a “National ID” to access services I paid taxes for. This is taxation without representation if they deny services because you do not have a REAL ID. A State ID is plenty enough and should be plenty enough.
If it is for Voter ID, I am happy about it.
This has been going on for years. No one should be surprised.
A funny note: I had to get a duplicate SS card because mine had been laminated when I was a kid. Going into the SS office the clerk laughed and said that it seemed everyone’s mom had their card laminated in late 1960s. He had done four of them that morning.
After that was done, getting the Real ID was easy. I had a passport card anyway, so it was a secondary concern.
The point was that for nearly a decades the consensus here has been that this was government overreach, especially during Obama.
Now it’s a good idea.
It’s almost like there are no principles, only teams to cheer.
I take that back, it’s exactly like that.
I have three forms

Funny how under Biden illegals could fly anywhere without ANY of these.
‘ nearly a decades’
Should be nearly 2 decades.
I remember the good old days of air travel. Wen you could walk up to a plane while it was boarding, pay cash for a ticket, and get on the plane and fly. Freedom, America was like that once.
What’s the best thing to do if you’re 75, had your driver’s license taken away and want to fly to see your grandchildren or dying only child?
The DMV sent me my renewal notice for my drivers license. Wouldn’t you know it, the new one will be a Real ID compliant card. The requirements on my end are readily available so it is what it is.
A REAL ID driver’s license is a state-issued identification that meets federal security standards established by the REAL ID Act of 2005. It is required for domestic air travel and access to certain federal facilities, and it is marked with a gold star in the upper right corner.
Don’t know anything about the flag.
I know that, but it's required to have citizenship documents on file to get a Real ID compliant driver's license or ID card. My wife had to file a certified copy of her birth certificate plus a certified translation in English to the DPS in addition to her Ukrainian passport in order to apply for a Texas driver's license. When my wife got her US citizenship, that information got forwarded over to the Texas DPS. Her mother who is currently in the US has a Texas ID card. She had to provide all that data to the Texas DPS to get the ID card which she uses for any purpose an ID is required like going to a doctor's office and boarding a domestic flight in the US.
“Have you gotten your REAL ID?”
When I updated my license years ago I got the star and I didn’t have to do anything. Maybe because I’m a veteran?
But non-citizens? Don’t worry about it. We won’t even make sure you leave when required to by law.
You can get a State ID Card. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate and two utility bills to confirm your address.
A few years ago...
However, in MD, all disease-ridden migrant invaders can also receive the same ID...
So, this may not be a complete solution...
