I remember hearing about it, but what I recall they could locate them electronically, but at the time Egyptian authorities were wary of excavating there for fear of damaging them or undermining the main structure. Also (IIRC), the underground areas appeared to be largely empty. I don’t know if there’s been any updates about this since then; the world of archaeology moves slowly, especially in politically unstable and impoverished parts of the world.
