I would be quite happy if they stop sending electricity to NY.

Liberal New Yorkers should be happy, less fossil fuels, will have Save Da Erf.

The problem? Ontario depends on that revenue just as much as the U.S. depends on the power. Cutting off the supply means Ontario’s energy producers lose their biggest customers. It’s like burning your own wallet to make a point.

So basically what we have here is a politician talking out of his ars.

Malaysia and the Philippines are the largest nickel miners - we need to switch where we buy our nickle

Trump acts, the others “threaten”. They will all fold, just a matter of time.

Dayum! Maybe he really does want to become the 51st state? Or just a territory?

Cutting power is pretty heartless, especially since winter isn’t over yet, especially in the northern states. The fact that we provide Canada with military protection by virtue of them being our neighbor should be enough to keep power up and running.

They will have to stop talking and start cutting before anything can happen.

Man, I had to get into the deep woods with AI search engines just to get this. It’s probably missing a ton, but it’s a scary enough starting point.

Some notable tariff percentages that Canada and Mexico apply to US goods:

Canada:

Dairy products: 200-300% for over-quota imports
Poultry: 200-300% for over-quota imports
Eggs: 150-250% for over-quota imports
Certain alcoholic beverages: 1-25%
Some textiles and footwear: 5-20%

Mexico:
Certain dairy products: 20-45% for over-quota imports
Some agricultural products (seasonally): 15-45%
Select processed foods: 15-30%
Certain textile products: 10-25%
Some footwear: 10-30%

Nickel is sold across the world. Ontario sells into the US ‘cause of low transport costs and subsidies the US provides on other things.
F!@#$ ‘em.

Raise tariffs on nickel to 50%.

The nickel they could sell to someone else -- or sit on until the market changes.

The unsold electricity is revenue lost forever.

Perhaps the US will be selling electricity to Canada is a few years?

Under the knucklehead leadership of Tampon Tim Walz, Minnesota is on a path to being zero carbon in five years, so that electricity they get from Canada can be replaced by unicorn farts and more forests of windmills.

Canada has more hydroelectric generation than it can possibly use. They have dams on the lakes and rivers all flowing into the Atlantic. Primarily on the Saint Lawrence.
They produce much more electricity than they can possibly consume. The US utilities are the ones building or have built the transmission lines to move that electricity south to where it is needed in the USA.

Much of this is because the older nuclear and coal plants that have been shut down. Plus, the NIMBY effect kept natural gas pipelines from being built from PA.
Plus the only new electric generation has been in the form of windmills and solar panels.

Doug Ford is throwing a tantrum, and he wants the whole continent to feel it.

We can't exactly starve them out, but maybe cutting off their crack supply would help.

“ Unlike other things, Ontario cannot sell it electricity else where. So start shutting down the power plants and laying of their workers Doug and see how well that works for you”
***********************************

And my understanding (which may be partially wrong) is that Canada sells electricity to American customers during times of excess generation by Canadian generators.

How are tariffs going to work with companies on either side of the border? Will they be playing fast and loose with the payments (well, duh)?

HEB, a Texas owned grocery chain has stores, processing plants and food products grown in Mexico. They used to ship their Mexico brand, EconoMax, covering many different foods to the US but today only 5 items of EconoMax are on the shelves - cat food, paper plates, mustard, face tissue and coffee creamer. Many customers haven’t realized they have a half dozen different store brand label names they slap on cans/packages indicating low to higher prices. I never saw much quality difference but it is a way to jack up their profits. I also believe Mexico isn’t just producing the EconoMax label but all of them. About 20 years ago, the labels started having English on one side and Spanish on the other - doubt they’ll change to just the official language.

In the US, HEB also has different price/quality store names - lowest priced being Joe V’s and Mi Tienda catering to Hispanics, HEB for the average customer and Central Market for the higher income customer. All a scam, imo.

HEB has a racket going with Whataburger with entire aisles dedicated to one single item such as Whataburger mustard. Seriously, as far as the eye can see, nothing but Whataburger mustard, or an entire aisle of Whataburger ketchup, or an entire aisle of nothing but Whataburger whatever. This in small rural towns that will never sell that many mustards, so why? Shelf space for other foods is needed (no fresh cauliflower or pork ‘n beans, etc. for 20 years). Not good business practices but I’m not their CEO. Wonder if Mexico makes Whataburger foods and that’s why illegals have taken over small town Whataburgers as their own?

DOGE might need to audit businesses to see just how much they’ll claim in tariffs vs their US made products, hmmm.
