Doug Ford is throwing a tantrum, and he wants the whole continent to feel it. The Ontario Premier, in response to Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, is now vowing to cut off nickel shipments to the U.S., a move he claims will “shut down manufacturing” south of the border. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s also hinting at flipping the switch on electricity exports. Big threats, but let’s break down what’s really going on here.
Nickel is no small thing—Ontario supplies about 50% of what the U.S. needs for its industries. It’s a core component in stainless steel, batteries, and a range of high-tech applications. If Ford follows through, it could create real headaches for American manufacturers. But let’s be clear—cutting off that supply doesn’t just hurt the U.S., it cuts deep into Ontario’s own economy too. Who’s really taking the hit here?

Lol
Unlike other things, Ontario cannot sell it electricity else where. So start shutting down the power plants and laying of their workers Doug and see how well that works for you
OK cut the electricity off if you have malignant stupidity. Canada’s economy is 7% of the economy of the USA as measured in GDP. The USA has far greater ability to hurt Canada than what they can do to us.
Since importers pay the tariffs, they have the effect of making the goods from a source subject to import tariffs more expensive than those without tariffs. if there are alternative sources, this has the effect of forcing the seller to lower prices to compete. One would hope that Trump analyzed how this might play out before proceeding.
Ford is just playing domestic politics. He’s well aware of how much Canada would lose vs how much Ontario will lose.
He doesn’t mean a word he says and he knows it.
But the commercial says Ontario and the US are BFFs.
Trump has analyzed it. He’s concluded that if it raises the price to Americans, it’s worth the price of the agenda he is seeking. Look at the effects, Companies are coming home. Americans have to be wiling the price to guarantee domestic production or it will go back to the way it was in the end.
Do provinces have independent rights to act against foreign entities?
“The USA has far greater ability to hurt Canada than what they can do to us.”
They used to call that “cutting off your nose to spite your face.”

This is the problem with socialism, if the government is not involved in your company they can’t restrict who you sell commodities to, unless of course you are a sworn enemy or terrorist nation.
Ontario’s “threat” is an encouragement for Americans
to look elsewhere for nickel.

Can anyone find a list of trade tarrif percentages that Canada and Mexico imposed on US goods in the past 10 or so years?
a Google search just shows the current “trade war” nonsense and I can’t find any reliable sources of past product and tarrif percentages other countries have imposed on the US for the past decade or so.
Thanks.
Given all the tariffs that Canada has had on certain US goods, one would think that they would reconsider. Funny how tariffs are fine for other countries but not the US.
It would be a very Trudeau thing to do, to ban exports that come from another province.
Not sure where the nickel comes from, but hydro is mostly an Ontario export.
Canada’s not a constitutional Republic. Their “states” have no rights. They’re people are not even really free are they? They pretend they are, as do many of the subjects of his majesty, Charles III.
So he’s going to raise the cost of electricity in Canada to punish Trump for calling Canada on unfair trade?
Is he also going to hold his breath until he is blue?
Canada literally has extra electrical capacity it either going to be used or wasted. It costs nothing to incrementally produce it. Its sale lowers the prior paid by Canadians.
It's hydro power from dams in the north.
Just throttle back and let the excess water go over the spillway.
Not a lot of operators involved.
But there are lot of US dollars flowing northward to pay for it.
