Spanning 3,400 miles, the tunnel would be the most ambitious infrastructure project ever undertaken. The difficulties of building an underground rail tunnel all the way from London to New York might seem insurmountable, yet plans to actually construct such a tunnel are genuinely being considered, with those behind the idea estimating that it could cost somewhere in the region of $20 trillion.
Not only would the tunnel be the longest ever built by a huge margin at 3,400 miles long, but it would also make incredibly fast trans-Atlantic travel a reality, with trips between New York and London taking a mere 54 minutes to complete.
This remarkably short travel time would be achieved by creating a vacuum within the tunnel and using pressurized vehicles that could theoretically reach speeds of up to 3,000mph.

Better not have a breach of vacuum anywhere along the route.
They can’t even do this for 10 miles yet as far as I know. The idea has been around since the mid 70’s as far as I know.
It would be better to accelerate an electric rail rocket/glider airplane to 4000 miles per hour and send it on path to Londonistan. Hits high speed, and height as a wingless rocket ..when on downward trajectory sprouts glider wings and glides to destination. Built by Boeing, of course.
Yes.
$20 Trillion/1000.
Not sure if he can quite manage that.
A $1 Trillion will work just fine for me.
Still saves $19 Trillion.
That was my first thought.
What about all the volcanic activity? One good earthquake and it’s all money down the toilet.
And how long would it take to traverse that distance?
I don’t even like tunnels through mountains. No way I’m going that deep for that long. And where’s the fresh air coming from?
And what exactly is the point of such a tunnel?
The tunnel would cross the intercontinental rift (the same feature that causes Iceland’s volcanic activity). What are they going to do when service is interrupted by new magma invading the tunnel?
Actually, you would need asbestos suits. The rift between the plates is an area of upwelling molten rock.
No, but you'll never have to worry about the cold where the Mid-Atlantic Rift crosses the tunnel.
Wait till an earthquake hits the areas those bridge are built, or a landslide just above and below the bridges and roads. I would guess the loss of life would be accepted as the “cost of doing business”... If they knew that between 35-50 thousand people died in traffic automobile accidents in USA yearly...would they have been so excited about automobiles?
FYI: In 2022 about 5.2 MILLION incidents of physician consultations for automobille traffic accident injuries was reported. Cost of doing business...
There are massive tunnels/bridges in Asia especially China and I don’t see them collapsing and killing thousands of people at a time.
Yeah, like how to pay for it.
Them “In 2022 about 5.2 MILLION incidents” were not from tunnels/bridges collapsing.
It doesn’t matter where it goes, it’s not feasible. A train ride to Washington DC to New is 400 miles, approximately and it costs $250 dollars. It would probably cost $5000-$10,000, heavily subsidized. There just isn’t enough business to cover the costs. The train couldn’t be long enough to pay its own way.
I can give a 99% guarantee that this will not be built. The economics is just not there for it.
Not only is it feasible, it will inevitably be built sooner or later.
If we can take humans to Mars, we can built a tunnel from London to New York.
Sounds like some lame brain like AOC would come up.
I don’t believe it is feasible. There is no economic reason for it.
We will have to agree to disagree and let the economics of speak for itself. You can rib me later if it ever gets built on this side of eternity.
Not yet for sure.....but when seismographers keep discovering new faults in places we don’t expect it gives me pause. After all, even God couldn’t sink the Titanic. And viruses which have been “passaged” through different mutational states would never be dangerous and passed on through animals OR escape the labs. Don’t forget the Vajont dam disaster 10/9/1963..cost of doing business...
Freeeee-gards.
Yay.
Just what we need.
The richest person in the world with the ear and respect of the president lobbying for a 20 trillion dollar contract.
Everything is fine.
Yes, but he also makes these sorts of grandiose plans in order to pump his stock. He'll even pump so hard he'll even lie about actually doing them, knowing the internet forgets two weeks later:
Developing fuel-efficient supersonic airliners would make more sense.
