Oh please! And who do you trust to administer and grade the exam?

Best solution is to repeal the 17th Amendment. Go back to what the Founders intended the senators to be. Spokesperson for the state as a corporate body picked by the state legislature. Every legislator (as will Grand Poohbahs of the state!) will see him\herself capable of occupying that seat so there should be plenty of competition for the position. (Though not adamantly opposed to a two-term limit!) Perhaps allow a petition after two or three years into a six-year term to force a reconsideration by the state legislature of who is occupying the seat. The six-year term is necessary all shortening it will do is make the Senate even more like the House. It already suffers from that now due to popular election.

Failing to repeal the 17th then the next best solution is to only allow two consecutive terms. The politician must be absent from the Senate for a full Senate term (6 years!) before he\she can return. This to keep the poor dear from gaming the system and trying to run for the other Senate slot. I still think allowing popular election of senators cripples the Senate’s purpose and is damaging to our republican (Notice small “r”!) system.

Prior to the 17th amendment, the Representatives were the only people in Congress whom we voted for. Districts were small enough that the pool of capable people was small and the representatives were known in their communities.

Senators were appointed by the state legislatures, so term limits wouldn't have applied to them. If they failed to follow through with the state's agenda, they were replaced when their term was over.

> You’d be asking lawmakers to effectively fire themselves. <

It can be done, but only if the constitutional amendment exempts current members of Congress.

That’s the way the 22A works. Presidents are limited to two terms. But the then current president (Harry Truman) was exempt. He could have run for as many terms as he wished.

Use a furniture dolly and just a few degrees to vertical. No one will catch on.

The problem with allowing the people to choose whomever they want, is compounded by the fact that the incumbent has a HUGE advantage during the campaign because they can call in all sorts of financial favors for their congressional district. Makes it almost impossible for them to be defeated by a challenger.

KY over road the Gov veto. KY law now requires the Gov to pick from a list of 3 candidates submitted by the party who currently holds the seat.

So what? It's a two year term, and there are 435 of them.

Since the federal government is supposed to be a body of delegated powers from the states and the executive is elected by Electors from the states, it's clear that the states (as distinct bodies) should be responsible for choosing the people who decide on making treaties the supreme Law of the Land and confirming the Justices who rule on the supreme Law of the Land.

That's why I say.

I think Beshear has to choose from 3 Republicans put forth by the Party.

Correct that is the law in KY now.

I do not like mandatory term limits. The voters can term anyone out that’s the system. Unfortunately it seems everyone hates Congress but loves their own Congresscritter. We have term limits in CA and it’s a disaster - everyone feeds at the trough for two terms then all the problems they created pass on to someone else. So there’s never any accountability.

Mitch’s body may be worn down but what really matters is his mind. Just because he has mobility issues isn’t a reason to toss him out. Though there are other reasons a lot of people don’t like him I get that. I don’t know what his ailments are.

Term Limits are a cop out for lazy, uninformed, easily led & manipulated, gullible-if you don’t for him/her the Democrat will win, complacent voters that continue to let their county & state politicians and the UNIPARTY prop up the ones they want, while running any challengers off via threats, bribes, intimidation.

With the internet being what it is, so many legit alternative news & research sources, having billions in a campaign chest shouldn’t matter anymore.
