(The Center Square) - Los Angeles City council voted to pass a $30 minimum wage for hotel and airport workers, along with an additional healthcare benefit starting at $8.35 per hour for employees of businesses that do not provide health insurance.
Businesses say the large spike in wages will lead to closures, scaling back employees, and hotels backing out of agreements put in place for the 2028 Olympics — and could threaten the city budget....
Hotels say the new wage increase is unaffordable, especially with income for many hotels flat as other costs rise, and could leave some with no option but to convert to homeless housing....

When I quit smoking, a pack of cigarettes for $3.50. And I thought that was crazy.
Ok, L.A. = Los Angeles.
I was confused because I thought odds were against Lower Alabama having such a huge minimum wage.
LA = Louisiana
No, that’s the postal code
the abbreviation is:
La.
I’ll top that. When I quit they were $4 a carton.
Awh, come on...quit messing around. Give them the $250/hr they really deserve. After all, if $30/hr is good, $250/hr has got to be great!
Well, we were thinking about throttling back LA. Sounds like they will become the “self-licking ice cream cone” all by them selves.
That’s what a pack cost in Canada when I quit 30 years ago. I wonder what they cost now?
Do they mean “homeless shelters” or “free lodging for illegal immigrants”?
My topper. PX price in 68 was 2.10 a carton. I quit in 72 or so not sure price since.
When would La be used? When are ANY state abbreviations used? I believed all states were capitalized 2 letters...
Curious! PA can also be Pa? Any state with one word?
GA - Ga - CT - Ct - MA - Ma etc etc..
Now WHEN I was young...............
Well, so much for “Fight for $15”...that ship sailed (as predicted). If I was a hotel chain, I’d be vacating a lot of facilities in the LA Metro Area.
Years ago traveling from OH to NY state, we stopped to get cigarettes in a podunk mountain town. I’ll confess, we were from CA - having moved to OH for a short time and were lost in the mountains. We apparently got off on an exit we thought was a route #. We weren’t used to #’s on exits. It was late, miserably cold and snowing...
My husband went in a convenience store and asked for a carton of xyz and the clerk said he couldn’t sell him a carton because someone else may stop for cigarettes and he wouldn’t have any left. Guess there was only one carton of xyz left in the store! I think we laughed about that for years....
I would bet their insurance companies immediately pull the plug.
Here's another issue I wonder about. Loan agreements for commercial properties, such as hotels, typically include clauses that restrict or require approval for changes in the use of the property. Converting a hotel into a homeless shelter could trigger a default under these clauses, especially if the new use negatively impacts the property's revenue potential, market value, or physical plant.
"New federal data suggests that California's increase of the fast food minimum wage has cost jobs. The fast food industry added 9,118 jobs in 2023 between March and June for the typical ramp up into summer. This year, they added only 406 jobs in the same time frame, after the fast food minimum wage rose from $16 per hour to $20 per hour at the start of April."
Two McRib meals, medium - sandwiches, fries and a drink - cost $32 now.
The “American” hotel owners will bring over their relatives from India.
“$30...an additional healthcare benefit starting at $8.35 per hour”
Small businesses will get sold off to large immigrant families.
Owners will employ relatives.
5TH FLOOR
The Rodriguez familia [lessors of the floor] wish you a pleasant stay in LA.
I unfortunately, was listening to NPR a few years ago. I was furious at a story about a woman who owned some run down failed hotel who was going to close it was soooo happy that the government put up illegals and sent millions her way to keep the dump open. Not one was it stated where the money comes from but hey, it’s NPR. Money appears by magic.
Please check-in/check-out at the restaurant next door.
