Writing four centuries ago, John Donne memorably opined, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” He memorably concluded, “Never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
The “bells” in Donne’s era were rung by the church upon the death of parishioners. This all came to mind in the aftermath of the presidential election, one implication of which is that higher education, no “island entire of itself,” is in for some tough reckoning
In this year’s elections, the woke majority dominating America’s universities was a huge loser. As the election seemed to demonstrate, most Americans are not fans of the progressivism dominating American campuses, where most of the faculty, top administrators, and even student leaders are part of a ruling campus Woke Supremacy.
During the Biden administration, progressives supported antisemitic demonstrations on many prominent campuses and tolerated protests that impeded learning and frightened diligent students and faculty. They created and defended a morally suspect and constitutionally dubious campus DEI bureaucracy. It was in the one part of the federal government that Democrats did not control, the House of Representatives, that higher education sealed its fate with the American public. There, during disastrous hearings featuring top university presidents, college leaders steadfastly refused to denounce behavior that most Americans found reprehensible.
Moreover, the Biden Administration used its Department of Education in extreme ways to promote its woke agenda—with the tacit blessing of our universities. The fiasco of legally dubious attempts to forgive student-loan debt was the clearest manifestation of this, but it was far from the only one.

We would know if Trump reforms are working if there are large scale lay offs of DEI administrators and a college president is perp walked off campus for violating the civil rights of white students. There are no Trump supporters in college faculty rooms, administration and executives. There is little chance of a friendly being a casualty.
Higher ed is a viper’s nest of Marxism in America. Don’t expect it to lie down and die peacefully.
An excellent read. Thank you.
Higher education has become a malignant cancer for our free republic. Where us the targeted radiation therapy?

I am a full professor at a major university. In a STEM field, obviously.
While I am greatly outnumbered, I am not alone in my conservatism on campus. Most are right-leaning Libertarian types, but there are a handful of genuine MAGA folks as well.
I detest what the Left has done to most of higher ed. There are times I am very tempted to leave and make more money in industry, but I have chosen to stay and fight from the inside.
I don’t envy you for working in a such a hostile environment. I hope you get to sue someone. Some conservative professors have gotten big pay outs.
Higher ED was ruined when all kinds of money came flowing in after WWII. It is now to the point that a bachelor’s degree is nearly useless. Logic, reasoning, truth from fiction, is not taught anymore. Most colleges are either completely useless or nothing but trade schools teaching basic skills. It now takes until a doctorate program before any semblance of critical thinking appears, and even then not always.
Recent reports that U of Michigan, a core source of the DEI cancer, is cancelling their half billion dollar DEI commitment. So yes, there will be DEI bureaucrats being shown the door there, as well as other places. In the private sector, DEI is dying a natural death. Of course anything Trump can do to accelerate the process will be a good thing for America..
It can’t happen too soon.
keep up the good fight!
As long as there is funding, collectivism will be a fixture on campus.
The solutions are simple.
Academia is absolutely corrupt.
Sending students home, during lockdown, to do their curriculum was proof positive JUST how insignificant these jerks are
God keep you in the lower intestine of the beast. That's what I'm doing in upending the environmental move-mint in Santa Cruz County, California.
You know there’s a problem on campus when admin can’t handle a life-sized cutout of Trump. Yes... it really did happen here locally.
