The October, 2024 National Instant background Check System (NICS) numbers are in. They do not show a significant difference in the trends. Both October gun sales and NICS checks are the fifth highest for October, which has been a consistent theme in 2024. While a bit lower than in 2023, the gun sales and NICS checks are still high by historical standards.
Gun sales for October 2024 are estimated at 1.26 million firearms, about 94% of what they were in October 2023. NICS checks for October were about 5% higher than they were in 2023. Both NICS checks and NICS-related gun sales are only somewhat correlated. NICS checks are used for purposes other than gun sales. States’ policies regarding NICS change. Some states require high numbers of NICS checks unrelated to gun sales. Most states do not.
The bar graph shows gun sales by type for months in 2023 (lines) and 2024 (bars).
It is obvious the trend for 2024 is a bit less than for 2023, except for August. August gun sales probably increased because of the assassination attempt on the former president and then-candidate for president, Donald Trump.

Do you know what the most popular types of guns were by sales quantity?
Mr. Weingarten probably knows the answer, I can’t wait for his response, but I would bet the leading purchase would be a 9 MM. handgun. You know, the kind the FJB said could “blow out a lung.”
The 9MM was laughed at in the 1930s, even though the bullet is the same size of a .38 spl. The .45 ACP was the “romp’em and stomp’em” cartridge for everyone.
Now everyone wants a 9mm. I still have my old St Louis Browning Hi-power.
Americans know that the DemoRATS are trying to bring us into WWIII now that they lost all their “powah”.
Considering the criminal/terrorist element being allowed to cross our border and disappear till they commit a crime here: Who is ending up with possession of a gun as a result of all these sales?
Now that the RATS’ Illegal Alien Invasion has been such a big success, it appears that the U.S. now has the majority of the world’s criminals operating within its own borders. Great job RATS!
Not as easy to answer as it might appear. Handguns are more popular than rifles and shotguns. As I recall, 9mm handguns are the most popular type, but numbers on individual models are not available from the ATF.
Thanks. I thought it might possibly be the AR15, but I can see how the 9mm pistol would be popular. The 9mm SD ammo has gotten much better recently.
