Sen. Mike Rounds introduces bill to eliminate US Department of Education

Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota introduced legislation Thursday that would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education and redistribute some of its programs across other federal agencies.

The “Returning Education to Our States Act” is the latest effort to remove the department by Rounds, who said he’s been pursuing the goal “for years.”

The Department of Education was established in 1979 during the administration of Democratic President Jimmy Carter. Rounds alleged in a news release that the department’s budget has swollen ever since then without improving education.

“Local school boards and state departments of education know best what their students need, not unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.,” Rounds said.

Nevertheless, Rounds’ release also said “there are several important programs housed within the Department,” which the bill would redirect to other departments. The release went on to list 25 such programs.

Critics of similar proposals have raised concerns that eliminating the department could lead to inequities in education funding, oversight and access among the states.

Calls to eliminate the Department of Education have been boosted by Republican President-elect Donald Trump, who recently issued a statement supporting the idea when he announced his plan to nominate Linda McMahon for secretary of the department. McMahon is a decades-long executive with World Wrestling Entertainment and was the head of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first presidency.

“We will send Education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort,” Trump said.

Does it require simple majority to pass or more?

Here is the text of the bill.. It is well intentioned (supposedly), but keeps entirely too much DoE crap going by spinning off to other fedzilla entities. In particular, the grants and guaranteed loan programs need to be ENDED.

I never understood why it existed. All the member countries of the US have their own education system. Why do they need another layer of bureaucracy?

Centralization of power. DoE is how fedzilla ensures proper communist indoctrination of "our" children.

But what are the 25 programs he wants to move to other bureaucracies? It really matters.

“grants and guaranteed loan programs need to be ENDED”

That’s what DJT has Vivek and Elon for.

When they start recommending cutting fat the squealing is gonna sound like a pig farm.....I for one can’t wait.

Beside the point.

THIS PARTICULAR LEGISLATION perpetuates those programs by spinning them off mostly to Treasury. THIS PARTICULAR LEGISLATION nominally ends the DoE, but perpetuates its wastefulness hidden in other agencies. THIS PARTICULAR LEGISLATION doesn't really cut the fat. THIS PARTICULAR LEGISLATION is a bit dishonest.

It’s a start! Trump has indicated he supports doing away with the Dept of Education. If you look at the decrease in basic educational achievements over the past 40+ years, it should be a no-brainer.

Even a government school graduate can read the writing on the wall. What the government is doing for education isn’t working. It’s way past time for a change.

Why would they need to redistribute some of its programs to other agencies? Are ANY of them both constitutional and a good, worthwhile idea? I doubt it.

“Republican U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota introduced legislation Thursday that would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education and redistribute some of its programs across other federal agencies.”

NO. Just delete it. Leave it to the states.

BUT give the money back to the people in an income tax cut equal in sum to the Dep of Ed budget. Let the states decide if they want to raise state taxes, but meanwhile lessen the federal tax burden on the taxpayers.

The Department of Labor/Equal Employment Opportunity Commission:

One of them should be eliminated. Duplication. Yet another excuse to spend money needlessly and hire more welfare recipients.

Thank you. My next question is, how much of the current Dept of Education program consists of those 25 programs to be transferred to other federal agencies? IOW, what would be dumped? Those 25 programs are huge, in and of themselves.

As a first step, if we get this, I’ll take it.

When was the last time a federal agency went bye bye?

Hope it happens quickly so Carter can see it.

Why? What's the point in introducing this bill now when Congress is going to adjourn sine die in two months? The bill is just going to die.

Why give the Democrats a sneak peek at the bill now? Why not wait until the new Congress convenes in January and introduce a clean bill then?
