Before Matt Gaetz withdrew from his Attorney General nomination today, Morning Joe was furiously kibitzing over how he could be unraveled over allegations of having sex with a minor and attending drug-fueled parties.
If they couldn't obtain the House Ethics Committee report, the Senate would conduct its own investigation, bringing live witnesses to testify as to Gaetz's activities--something that, Joe Scarborough argued, would be worse for the nominee.
That's when MSNBC Republican Elise Jordan blew the lid off it, by claiming Gaetz was an "addict" twice over. It's not simply an issue of morality:
"Your morality leads you to become compromised. And this is about not wanting a sex addict, not wanting a drug addict, having control of the nation's top secrets at the end of the day."

I seriously doubt that there was any libel. Gaetz had a reputation in the House for showing pictures on the House floor to his colleagues pictures of young women he claimed to have slept with and of parties he went to to where there were drugs and young girls.
So they say. They say a lot of things. They also say Trump was a Russian spy and they even have bank records and dossiers, they say 2020 was the most secure election ever. They still say Covid was natural.
They say a lot of things. They say Epstein committed suicide. They say the FBI did not create Jan 6. They say a militia was going to kidnap Whitmer. And they even have proof of all of it to show you!
Don’t be so gullible.
She better be ready to produce the proof.
Rumors and second and third hand claims don’t count.

Key Facts
• The Justice Department informed Gaetz’s attorneys, Marc Mukasey and Isabelle Kirshner, Wednesday that the investigation into allegations of sex trafficking and obstruction of justice was over, Gaetz’s congressional office told Forbes.
• Federal prosecutors made the recommendation not to charge Gaetz, a four-term congressman, in September, reportedly because of credibility issues with two key witnesses, the Washington Post reported.
• Before that, it was previously reported that Gaetz would be arrested for his role in the misconduct.
• Joel Greenberg, a former Florida official and friend of Gaetz, accused the congressman of paying a 17-year-old girl for sex and paying her to travel across state lines with him, the New York Times reported in March 2021.
• Gaetz has denied all charges against him.
These are the stories being told by Republican members of the House who were there. Several of these representatives are now Senators. That’s a bid reason a number of Republican senators were saying it was unlikely Gaetz would be confirmed by the Senate. In a defamation lawsuit the burden of proof would be in Gaetz to prove the accusations false.
What BOTH Trump and Geatz get is Rubio’s senate seat, the senate NEEDS a TRUE MAGA person there to be an utter thorn in Thune’s side!! McConnell won’t be to happy either!! Trump can cut some GREAT DEAL with DeSantis and put Gaetz in that seat!!
Oh I believe the RINO republicans who were supposedly there……..NOT, Gaetz is fighting the system their gravy train I DON’T believe a stinking word from RINO republicans!! Gaetz will end up in the senate AND that will really PISS THEM OFF!!!
“What BOTH Trump and Geatz get is Rubio’s senate seat,”
I hope that happens. I’m afraid that Lara will get Rubio’s seat. She probably would do a good job, but the carpetbagging aspect would be icky (a newcomer to FL), and so would the nepotism thing. I would be disappointed if that were to happen; others are more deserving and would be as effective in the Senate.
Actually a defamation lawsuit requires three things to be successful:
—Negligence on the part of the defendant in verifying that the claims are true
—Intent to defame (intentional hostility) on the part of the defendant
—False charges
The possible defamatory claims were very broad. A word like “addict” is subject to interpretation. A plaintiff could easily argue they were guilty of the behavior but were not an addict. They could present shrinks at the trial arguing that Gaetz was not an “addict”.
If the defendant did not have access to Gaetz’s shrink’s records (or worse if no such shrink exists) then they are on the hook for negligence in verifying their claims.
I like Gaetz’s chances in that lawsuit.
