Which states? To go from 312 to 400 he’d need something like CA, NY and or IL. Maybe some combination of OR and WA and ME and VA and NH etc. I mean 88 EVs is a lot.

Yeah. Maybe 350 (+MN, NM, NH, NJ), but that’s about the limit.

That's just the point. Internal polls (and unbiased public polls) were showing Trump with a clean sweep between NY and CA, with the (possible) exception of IL. He was flipping VA, NJ, MN and NH and closing in on NY, IL and OR. Down ballot Dems were getting nervous about an electoral wipe out, especially in the Senate.

At the very least, replacing dementia Joe with Cackling Kamala gave the Dems some "breathing space." It gave the fake news mafia a new angle to run propaganda and change the narrative. To some extent, it even worked. Trump won only the most competitive swing states, and nothing more. The Repubs gained Senate seats only in states that were firmly in the Trump column, e.g. Ohio, West Virgina and Montana.
