“Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said the suspect took cover near a chain-link fence between 300 and 500 yards...”
C’mon, Ric, we can’t narrow it down to something more definite than a 2 football field gap? 300 seems really close while 500 seems pretty far.
“Better pictures show the SKS rifle with an improvised scope mount. An unusual set-up for a would be sniper.”
That’s assuming this is the actual weapon he had. I’m not sure we can believe that. It’s sad in a way, but I no longer trust a single word coming from anyone who works for the Federal government on any subject.
What kind of moron would try to lay prone with that? There’s no way you could get a decent sight picture with that piece if crap.

One would think this shooter would have been more hidden if he had a brain...
The next hole would have brought him within 150 feet.
later
That would be “sniper” must have ordered that rifle from the same place Lee Harvey Oswald got his.
some unusual equipment for a guy who only makes $30K per year, and just flew in from Hawaii
Maybe some one can ask him...
If you want to find the third wannabe assassin before they try something, just watch all of the Blackrock commercials. That person is in one of them.
Back before my canoeing accident....
I owned an SKS factory modified for the AK47 type detachable magazine like the one in the picture. This was 25 or more years ago.....back when I had to have EVERYTHING FIRST as it came out.
My 1/2 dozen standard SKS’s were challenged to group 4 inches at 100 yards......this modified version could not hold an 8 inch group at 100 yards!
Machining out the receiver as necessary to convert an internal magazine to a detachable one, left the sides weak and subject to torsional flex.
I dumped it at the first opportunity.
This is they type of rifle you arm someone with that you WANT to make noise, but miss.
Oh.....BTW.
The 7.62x39 cartridge...it drops
-7 inches at 200 yards
-27 inches at 300 yards
-63 inches at 400 yards
-123 inches at 500 yards
The numbers are right. You might as well throw a rock beyond 200 yards.
Again, a rifle you let someone use you WANT to get caught.
It is the second time a madman armed with an assault rifle has tried to kill the 45th president in two months.
_____________
I disagree, that these were madmen.
Semi auto rifles have been around since 1903. The SKS is really not much different than a common Remington Model 8 made in 1905. That is 119 years ago.
Here is a Remington Model 8.

500 yards with 7.62-39 in an SKS model, even with a great scope would be a tough shot, IMHO. This is like one of the worst combinations of round choice, distance, and platform, for that type of shot. 7.62x39 is subsonic at 500 yards, it would be a very bad choice for long range shooting (greater than 400 yards).
I find it fascinating that both of the Trump attempted shooters used platforms that I would never have chosen for distance accuracy. Essentially an M4 version of AR, without bull barrel or standard length, and in the second case a round that isn’t even that accurate on a military rifle. The first shooter would have been better off changing the upper to 20 inch 1-7 twist barrel. The second shooter would have been more accurate with an ancient Mosin Nagant and 7.62 x 54r, if he wanted cheap and Russian. Both would have been better off with a Hunting Rifle in 30-06 with a penetrator (for body armor).
It’s like they were more interested in making a ‘assault weapon’ statement than a shot.
