That is generally the rule for handguns. Long guns, depending on the state where you want to buy it and your home state, can be purchased in the state you are visiting and carried home. My F-I-L did this a few years ago. He was visiting us in New Mexico from Idaho. He saw a rifle he wanted to buy and he went in, passed the NICS check, and walked out with it.
Unfortunately, La Gobernadora Lujan-Grisham signed a 7-day waiting period law here. Went into effect earlier this year. So, visitors may not be here long enough to meet the waiting period.
