How does your state rank in terms of encouraging legal gun ownership? Our results are surprising! We took into account the current gun laws, current legislators' past voting history, 2A-centric taxes, and more to bring you this comprehensive list for 2024.
~~SNIP~~
Report Highlights:
New Hampshire is #1 thanks to its incredibly relaxed gun laws, low crime rates, and lack of state sales tax.
West Virginia is #2 due to recent legislative actions to remove firearm restrictions and reduce sales tax on firearms and ammunition.
Arkansas, Montana, and Mississippi are #3, #4, and #5, thanks to their pro-2A governors, stand-your-ground laws, and relaxed carry and conceal requirements.
Utah, Arizona, and Arkansas all dropped in the rankings to #25, #24, and #23 due to their current governor’s Second Amendment stance.
Some states ranked better than others due to the current governors’ past and present 2nd Amendment voting history.

Very low crime rate.
What could be the reason for that?
God bless Arkansas. But, we won’t stop until we’re #1.
My state didn’t even make the list.
I could have predicted that.
It defies all liberal logic!
“Well, in the first place an armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.- Robert Heinlein
LOL...perhaps there's a direct cause and effect between relaxed gun laws and low crime rates? Ya think?
Besides, how would "low crime rates" help make a state "gun friendly"?
Oklahoma has open and concealed carry without a license.
“New Hampshire is #1 thanks to its incredibly relaxed gun laws, low crime rates,”
Captain Obvious, please tell, does one follow the other?
Hmmm . . .
the fact that the state is 89% white and 1.5% black is the main factor in the lower crime rates of the region.
For all his faults, George W. Bush as Texas governor did sign legislation that allowed concealed carry.
The Florida stats are misleading. Prior to the Legislature throwing concealed carry wide open to anyone who is a “resident”, we had to be registered and obtain a Permit. Which included fingerprinting. You renew every six years. The difference is if you have the Permit you are granted reciprocity when traveling to the 37 states which have the agreement with Florida. But just having a Florida Drivers License does not grant you the same CC reciprocity rights when travelling to those other states. You would have to have the Permit. That’s my understanding of it anyway. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
“the fact that the state is 89% white and 1.5% black is the main factor in the lower crime rates of the region.”
Thanks for saving me the trouble of looking that up to state the obvious - homogeneity makes for a strong culture, not DIE. Demographics determine destiny
Arizona is great if your only concern is carrying, but using them is anothed matter.
On the other hand, Illinois bites on carrying but is very good on usage.
“So does Arizona, yet we’re 24th on the list.”
Shannon’s law...can’t protect your dog, among other no-no’s.
> Hawaii is officially the worst state for gun owners. While the state has many unreasonable laws similar to others, Hawaii is also actively defying the Supreme Court and challenging the right to keep and bear arms[90]. Only those with a carry permit may possess a firearm in Hawaii. However, Hawaii does not always issue permits.
as the worst state, Hawaii beats california.
in hawaii, the stick in the craw is the permit license, which is “may issue” (usually translates to “decided, by the powers that be, issue”).
on the surface, hawaii gun law might be the gun law to be challenged next in court. otoh, the population of hawaii is small compared to other states, so the biggest bang for the buck might be somewhere else.
So what is Arkansas? #3 or #23?
For all his faults, George W. Bush as Texas governor did sign legislation that allowed concealed carry.
And I believe the mass shooting at the Luby’s in Killeen had a major motivating factor. And that lady (can’t recall her name) pushed the issue. She survived. Her gun was left in the car per laws. If she had it, she woulda taken that creep out early.
In September and October of 2023 at age 68, I did a solo motorcycle trip through 23 states and 11,000 miles. I open carried in every state except SC and FL. In some states, like MI, WI, and IA people looked at me like I had two heads. Others either nobody noticed or acted like they didn’t. One citizen and two LEOs shook my hand and thanked me for carrying. Both LEOs were jealous of my FN Five Seven.
