What if the spider was pregnant?
Was the roommmate just giving it an abortion?
Or maybe a trans spider, getting surgury?
And rioters walk free.
I hope it wasn’t an “Emotional Service” Spider.
But this was not a spider in the wild, or a spider that didn't belong to anyone getting into a house and scaring the occupants.
The spider in question was a pet, and therefore it was someone's property. The property was destroyed. And it was also destroyed in such a way that caused the pet suffering.
Replace "pet spider" with "pet dog" and the destroyer of the pet would be punished.
Cats would have immunity under the Garfield Rule

Jumping spider? Those can be quite friendly and could see that having a pretty cool life hanging out in an enclosure as a pet.
Pet vs wildlife. The roommate is a sicko and did it on purpose to hurt the owner.

I lived for years out in the New Mexico desert...
I learned to exist with the tarantulas and scorpions but never came close to considering one as a pet, egads!
I will have to cut the spider drowning gal some slack here....
Never visit Australia if you really hate spiders, they have some LARGE ones....

I got these big wolf spiders in my basment and it is open season all year long.
Spiders are disgusting, loathesome, freaky looking bugs and the only good one has been prepared well done via flamethrower.
HOWEVER
This particular loathesome, demonic looking arachnid was someone’s property. If I paid good money for a spider (UUUUUGH) and loved it as a pet for some incomprehensible reason, and someone killed it, I imagine I’d want justice too.
So while spiders are my most hated critters on earth, I have to agree with you
If the headline had read woman kills roommates’ $70.00 pet spider it wouldn’t get many clicks.
That’s why you should always spay or neuter your spider.
And while your at it, don’t forget to immunize your coyote.
Animals cannot have rights, nor can they respect them.
God said we have dominion over them.
They are property, at most. We are to be caretakers, but they are, in no way, human equivalent.
“The property was destroyed.”
And the owner lost something of personal value to her because of an intentional act by the perpetrator.
I see that as a crime against the woman, not the spider.
