Trump and Bump Stocks: Shrewd Strategy or Fortuitous Improvisation?
AmmoLand ^ | July 22, 2024 | Dean Weingarten

On October 1, 2017, a mass murderer killed 58 people by firing at them from an elevated position in Las Vegas. Over 800 were injured. Stephen Paddock was found, an apparent suicide on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel. He had a reported 23 firearms, of which 12 had bump stocks installed. In the audio recordings of the event, the firing sounds much like automatic weapons fire.

President Trump had been in office for less than ten months. The calls for immediate legislation to ban bump stocks, the details of which included bans on virtually all semi-automatic firearms, were loud. Congressional resistance to the media onslaught existed but was in the minority.  The NRA called for the ATF to study the situation and remedy it with regulation if necessary. President Trump said he would consider regulation. From factcheck.org:

Several days after the shooting, Trump was asked if bump stocks should be banned, and he vowed his administration would “be looking into that over the next short period of time.”

The NRA seemed supportive of the idea. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and NRA political strategist Chris Cox issued a statement  saying, “The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semiautomatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations.”

The New York Times, a reliably far-left promoter of ever more restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms, published this on November 8, 2017:

But the proposed ban on bump stocks, once hailed as a modest step toward bipartisan compromise on gun safety, may be turning into a cautionary tale of how energetic intentions in the wake of mass shootings can dissipate quickly. As attentions moved elsewhere, the N.R.A. turned against action,

Was the bump stock ban by executive order a planned and effective strategic retreat, or was it lucky improvisation which brought about positive results?

Sounds like making excuses for infringing on the 2nd Amendment.

A ban on bump stocks does not equate to a ban on guns of any kind....imho

It is a slippery slope, a knee-jerk reaction.

It’s 4 years later....

And we still don’t know WHO the shooter was. Or WHAT was his motivation. Or if he acted alone.

“Was the bump stock ban by executive order a planned and effective strategic retreat, or was it lucky improvisation which brought about positive results? “

Maybe both. A retreat to take the heat off which had unintended consequences that were positive.

Or maybe Whoever sparked an impulse for him to turn his head at the right moment sparked an impulse to do this.

Please re-read the Second Amendment.

Read it carefully, syllable for syllable.

Look up every word in the dictionary, if necessary.

Read it one more time.

Now, tell me:

How many times does the word “ban” appear in it?
How many times does the word “infringe” appear in it?

Is “infringe[ing]” something that is mandated, permitted, or forbidden to the government?

Now, you’re going to splutter that “bump-stocks are stupid”. I agree. They’re also a symptom. Can you explain to me why they even exist?

Oh, yeah: I already know the answers ... do you?

It was clever because it was just an executive order and could be reversed any time....and it headed off legislation which would be permanent.

Once we get these bump stocks banned..
We can finally close that infamous Belt Loop Loophole!!

And ALL CRIME WILL END! For the Children!!

None of the above, it was an emotional, Unconstitutional, and irresponsible reaction to a crisis, where an inanimate object was scapegoated for a human being's criminal actions.

Even in recent times, Trump has been inconsistent on the 2nd Amendment (ex. bump stock ban, red flag laws), and I am extremely concerned about his stance on Semi-Automatics due to the recent assassination attempt, and his pursuit of "suburban women" who hate firearms and the Second Amendment almost as much as they enjoy killing their unborn children.

Trump grew up in anti-2A NYC. Trump paid the vig necessary to get a concealed carry license in NYC that nobody else could get.

Trump pushed the Bump Stock ban because he genuinely believed that they should have been banned. Don Jr. is the pro-2A Trump, but even Don Jr. can't fully stop President Trump from following his lifelong instincts.

The problem is, accessories on a gun make the gun. I have binary triggers on two, red dot scopes, lighter triggers, Etc. once you start banning specific items, you affect the ability of citizen to possess a firearm. That Is infringing. The slippery slope is, they could then tell us that we can only have a certain caliber firearm, maybe black powder only, single shot, etc.

I recall there was some Saudi prince there and it was an attempted assassination attempt. The American found dead didn't likely shoot anyone—the posing buyers did, and these people were to use the weapons in their attack.

The Saudi prince was staying in a floor above where the gun showing took place, but they got him out, in time. A video shot of him in a close casino was shown.

The people on the ground who were shot were simply a diversion from the actual intended crime.

Do you recall something like this?

Are bump stocks “stupid” because you are making the firearm do what it was not designed to do?

It seems so, to me. An automatic weapon fires from an open breach, I thought, so that you could not “cook off” a round in a hot breach.

It seems that the bump stock makes this more possible, as Bubba may be slamming mags in there and having fun, while misusing his firearm.

What I said is not what I was pondering. And my thought follows you...It’s an accessory like a trigger, scope...etc etc. It should have never been banned....and so it never should have gotten to court.

It was a stfu..hush puppy if you will, to the anti gunners. Trump (or his advisors) calculated that it would impact the fewest gun owners, then ham fisted it through knowing it would likely get slapped down. Then they could shrug and say “Well, we tried”.

That been my theory. YMMV.

” An automatic weapon fires from an open breach”

*** MOST/MANY modern FA guns fire from a closed bolt.

It seems that the bump stock makes this more possible, as Bubba may be slamming mags in there and having fun, while misusing his firearm.”

WHAT does that even mean?

If somebody is putting rounds down range and hitting the target? How is how fast they can do it “misusing” their gun?

Have you ever seen how fast some of the IPSC/IDPA guys can unload a full mag on target no mods/ bump stocks and iron sights? in MANY cases a LOT FASTER than many FA subguns.
It is amazing to see those guys.

it does if it says that in the legislation which is what the dems do all of the time, look at the immigration law they wanted that would only allow 150,000 a month in, great way to limit illegals.
