The article does not mention the US Marshals Service until right near the end. Supreme Court Justices are not protected by the Secret Service but by the US Marshals Office of Protective Operations.
Not only are those OPO agents as well trained as SS agents, they have overarching jurisdiction unlike any other Federal agents.
Unlike any other agency, every US Marshal is appointed directly by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Most agents of the service are not Marshals however, but Deputy Marshals who are hired by the service, not appointed by the President. But every Deputy Marshall answers to a Marshal.
