The delegates should have voted “no”, that would have forced input and dialogue.
If you aren’t given enough time to deliberate changes to a platform you know and agree with, your default should always be “no”.

It has seemed to me for a long time that the national conventions are mainly an excuse for the party's higher muckety- mucks to have a near week-long party.

They could have voted “no.” I do think it was rushed through because of the abortion position. Pragmatists wanted it softened to help Republicans get elected. Party hacks didn’t want a week’s worth of news cycle about republicans fighting over a national abortion ban.
I can see the point but I worry whenever customs and norms are ignored in the name of “getting stuff done.” Turning off some hardcore supporters in the name of convenience could bite Pubbies in the end.
