On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument will host a day of remembrance to commemorate the 148th anniversary of The Battle of Little Bighorn.

This year’s commemoration theme is inspired by Wooden Leg, a Northern Cheyenne warrior who fought against Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. Years later, despite the challenges and battles that had taken place, Wooden Leg said, “we once were enemies, and now we are friends.” This sentiment of friendship continues today through the relationships and collaborative efforts involved to co-steward the land where the battle took place.

“Many of the Indians actually had repeating rifles.”
In at least one movie the question was asked but never answered, “Where did those Indians get those new repeating rifles?”

Good question. My guess is that one of Biden’s ancestors illegally sold the Indians those guns. But that’s just a guess.

I recall visiting as a kid - they were actually shooting Little Big Man at the time. This was in times gone by when the visitor’s center exhibits had some truly interesting native american artifacts on display.

Namely, at least three long blonde-hair scalps, clearly from Caucasian women.

Needless to say, those aren’t likely to ever see the light of day again, or oddly enough, fall into any repatriation requests.

Turns out that finishing dead last in your graduating class at West Point really does matter ... who knew?

I wasn’t there, so I can’t say with certainty. But it appears to me that Custer got himself and virtually all of his subordinates killed for no good reason. I just don’t think that’s something to celebrate.

Not only that, but he broke an earlier oath to the Lakota, that he would never take up arms against them.

Custer was not the evil man portrayed in films and later write ups. at the Washita he was under orders from Gen Sheridan to attack the tribes who had been raiding in Kansas. His Osage scouts followed their trail through the snow right to the Washita. The Osages were the ones who killed women and children.
https://www.nps.gov/waba/learn/historyculture/osage-scouts.htm
“According to Ben Clark, Custer’s head scout, the blame for the killing and mutilation of Cheyenne women and children at the Battle of the Washita lay squarely upon the Osage scouts because of past atrocities committed against them by the Cheyenne. Custer ordered Clark to stop the killing. The Osage then grabbed tree branches and bushes and beat the fleeing women and children back into the camp.”

The tribe was not on their reservation as it was farther north east in the Cherokee lands, not the Chocktaw Chikasaw lands. They got that area several years later but not in 1868. The bodies of captives Clara Blinn and her son were found near there.

That is a myth. When Custer left to go on this assignment both parties had already chosen their candidates for President.

The ammo was copper cased. It stuck. Brass cases did not.

The tribes before this had been trading for Winchester tube fed lever action rifles. Bourke, in the book, ON THE BORDER WITH CROOK states when they got repeating rifles they became “surly.”

I remember that Twilight Zone episode. And it never made a bit of sense to me. A tank would have been master of the battlefield. Heck, even its appearance would have scared the crap out of the Indians.

A disabled jeep, on the other hand…

Always ask, how did the indians at Little Big Horn treat the American POWs.

There weren’t any POW’s. They were all killed. I think two were captured but then mutilated.

”I believe he graduated last in his class at West Point.”

He graduated last of the cadets who remained at West Point. Half that class had left to join the confederacy.
