Upon furthur investigation, as recently as Jan 20, 2016 there were plans to “restore the world’s oldest temple.” According to National Geographic, “At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Turkey’s Doğuş Group will announce Wednesday that they plan to spend $15 million over the next 20 years on the project, in partnership with the National Geographic Society. “Göbekli Tepe is our zero point in time,” Doğuş Group chairman Ferit F. Şahenk said in a press release.”
It would appear that Ferit F. Sahenk, between then and now did a complete about-face on these plans. One must wonder why. One might suppose that the WEF changed his mind. Read more at:

A U.S. ton is 2,000 pounds. But he said they were 20 tons and that was 20,000 pounds 2,000 * 20 - 40,000 pounds. 22 tons would be 44,000 pounds.

But then he clarified that they were metric tons.

A metric ton 2,204.623 pounds. 2,204.623 * 20 = 44,092.46 pounds.

I listened to it to make sure I got exactly what he had said. He said they were 20 ton columns he than clarified that they were metric tons, that means they weighed 20,000 pounds.

I think you mean 1963 when it was first noted as being a site of possible significance. No archaeological digging happened until 1995 after a farmer partially uncovered the top of a post in 1994.
