A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft suffered a mid-air emergency on Friday after it plunged 16,000 feet, coming just 400 feet of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of the Hawaiian island of Kauai due to adverse weather conditions.

According to a Southwest Airlines memo to pilots, Southwest Flight 2786 from Honolulu International Airport to Lihue Airport in Kauai dropped from nearly 16,000 feet to an altitude of 409 feet.

As a private pilot I make no claim as to commercial skills. But in every airline flight of many thru the years, upon reaching a predetermined waypoint the PIC begins his approach. The very first thing he does is reduce throttle setting, reduce engine rpm. Then he or she lowers the airplane’s nose and establishes a glide. What the PIC in this case did, entering a dive at cruise speed was stupid, careless and insane.IMHO.

Just yesterday I boarded a Delta flight. As I entered, on the outside, next to the door, it had a “DEI company” sticker.

Just great...puts my mind at ease... smh.

“The less-experienced first officer “inadvertently” pushed forward on the control column before cutting the speed, causing the airplane to descend rapidly.”

With that the writer looses all credibility.

Civilization was created by people of above average intelligence and requires that same kind of people to maintain it.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Couple that truism with the fact that our Federal Government and most State Governments are now under the control of thieves and idiots, and you’ve clearly described the most dangerous existential threat America is now facing.

I’m far past trying to get useful info on articles written about anything to do with science and technology written by mere journalists.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
And the grammatical ignorance of many journalists nowadays is on the level of high school freshmen! It’s pitiful!

Maybe it was a helium leak or a door plug popping off or some hidden control the pilots find out only if the airliner buys the updated manual.

400 feet from the ocean.
The Boeing length of Boeing 737 Max 8 is about 129 feet...

Southwest Flight 2786 dropped from an altitude of roughly 1,000 feet to 400 feet above the ocean in just a few seconds, according to data from ADS-B Exchange, a flight tracking website. The plane, which was near Lihue Airport on the island of Kauai, then began a rapid climb.

The pilot-in-command and the pilot flying are not the same thing. Also, there are two types of pilot in command. There is the pilot in command who is responsible for the flight and the person who can log the time as pilot in command. They aren’t necessarily the same person.

An example. I’m a flight instructor. I take a brand new student on a flight. I let them have the controls. They are the pilot flying. I am the pilot in command.

The word is certified not certificated. So you lose all credibility arguing rule nuance when you use such an obviously inept word.

Second there is only one PIC and he is the left seater. On any aircraft there is a buck stops here guy, he is the PIC. His alone is the decision making authority should there arise a conflict or an emergency. If the right seater is flying the leg and the left seater says “I have the airplane”. The next response is from the FO “you have the airplane”. If the PIC were the guy flying the damn plane, he would not or could not be COMMANDED to relinquish authority.”

No. The gentleman was correct. We are certificated pilots, not certified. I have a pilot certificate in my pocket.

The PIC can sit in different seats. A flight instructor, for example, with a student pilot, sits in the right seat of a fixed wing aircraft and is the pilot in command, while the student, most of the time, is the pilot flying.

Intel, IBM, Microsoft and much of Silicon Valley have embraced DIE.
Intel seems to be slowly rejecting it but it might be too late.
They are smart people.
You would think they could easily see what DIE has done to Disney.

A 16,000 ft descent takes 4 minutes at 4,000 ft per minute. More to this story than just a possible DEI F/O.

Straight freefall, that's about 30 seconds.

The 737 has a glide ratio of about 17:1, so, assuming complete engine loss, 16M ft down is 270M ft forward. They generally cruise at Mach 0.7-0.8, but I assume they were on a landing approach (since 16,000 ft), so slowing to 0.4-0.5 at that point, maybe 450 fps. Simplified bit o' math and a straight, no-thrust glide would take about ten minutes to drop that far.

So they definitely flew down, but there's no way it was the uncontrolled straight drop the article makes it sound like it was!

I get what you and others are saying - but Boeing placed these pilots in the cockpit. Probably union rules and FAA regs enter into it but by scheduling them, Boeing is certifying that the pilots - either of them - are capable of handling any emergency that might arise...be it due to weather or due to their own screw up.

The aircraft didn’t crash into the ocean, so we can say they “handled it” but damn, 400 feet is a near disaster.
