One of the very first ships attacked by German U-boats prior to America’s entry into WW2 was the destroyer USS Kearny. The ship was attacked and damaged on Oct. 17,1941. 11 men were killed in the attack and the ship was damaged but the ship was repaired and returned to duty.

The sip was built in the shipyards of my hometown of Kearny, NJ.

Those shipyards are now long gone.

No doubt.

Thanks for your input also. I didn't know any of that. 🙂👍

I just knew they were attacking our ships because we were sending war material to Great Britain & others. I was never a war buff, mainly because my father who saw action in Italy, didn't want to talk about it really. Every now in then he would tell a horror story that made me not want to talk about it either. Best to let him forget then to remember.

About all I know is that he walked behind a tank, and that he had done enough time on skis that snow skiing held no entertainment for him whatsoever. And something else he told me about that I refuse to share.
