A California family whose children gathered what they thought were seashells off the beach has been fined $88,000.

Charlotte Russ and her children were actually collecting clams, which California has regulations to protect.

“They thought they were collecting seashells, but they actually collected clams — 72, to be exact,” she told the outlet.

“Getting Norwegian crab in Alaska?”

I was stationed in central Alaska in 1984-5 and we were lucky as it was a good year for crab, silvers and kings. Got all the good things at once.

Yeah, the coast was a part of memories our kids still cherish. I’m glad we were able to afford it.

It’s not illegal to keep them. You just need a fishing license and the size limit is 4.5 inches and I think the limit is 10 a day.

I had a friend in the 90s walking on the beach there and his nieces and nephews were catching little clams. They gave him a $300 ticket.

Yep, ate my fill. And the crab made a great opener for moose stew, elk or bear steaks. Had to do a lot of exercise up there to keep my shape as you can easily eat yourself to death.

“...part of memories our kids still cherish...”

My two and their families also.

I can remember going down there and always eating at Plessas’ Tavern at 891 Price Street, just off 101, the first night. Their baked clam on the half shell was beyong belief and if we three kids emptied our plate, Mr Lazarus, the owner after Mr Plessa died in the 1940’s, would give us a hershey bar to share.

At the south end of Price street going out of town is a motel that was there when we first went there. And they planted a tree in 1960 that we always called my mom’s tree because she like it. My mom passed about 8 years ago but that tree is still there, about 60 feet tall now, but is a real memory for me.

Also, no father mentioned in the article.

I know that I'm really going out on a limb, here, but...

Maybe it's a fatherless family.

Don’t you have to dig for clams?

Usually. But in periods of rough surf they sometimes are uncovered and moved up into the wash. Then the tide goes out and they're easily picked up.
