Oh, Andersonville and Elmira were both pretty bad.

I had relatives who ended up in both places.

But on this forum, lotsa “conservatives” will say that jail is supposed to be bad cuz that will deter people.

Now that they’re ending up in those places, the Noticing is rather loud.

Be interesting to see if that attitude holds up for much longer among “conservatives”.

Yup. Jails ought to be models of the social order most of the prisoners have never experienced, not hell holes run by the worst prisoners. They should be made to clean the place up, have a regular work schedule, etc..

If they act out they get the same treatment as in Japan: 30 days in solitary with water, rice and a vitamin totaling no more than 800 calories a day. Not many are willing to fight after a month of starvation.

Jail is supposed to be bad; but the 8th Amendment exists to prevent another Andersonville. Someone might mention it to the warden, whose guards seem to have decided that their power is infinite. If the media were honest, they would conclude that the environment there surpasses Abu Ghraib, which liberals like yourself mightily condemned.
