South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem (R) is at the center of a controversy following a report from The Guardian about her admission in an upcoming book that she shot and killed her family’s 14-month-old hunting dog, Cricket, and a goat after a series of aggressive incidents.
The book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” paints a stark picture of the hard choices Noem has faced in her personal life and political career.
In the book, Governor Noem describes a troubling incident where Cricket, a wirehair pointer, displayed uncontrollable behavior during a hunting trip, leading to the dog attacking chickens and attempting to bite Noem.

Kristy Noem might be right that it was a bad dog. But visuals are worse. She should have kept her mouth shut. Shooting the goat is going to really hurt her among the Muslim community. That’s tantamount to killing their girlfriend.
I would still vote for her and I think her explanation was not unreasonable. But she should not have published it.

This is yet another example of the double standard in the media. Democrats can do hugely illegal and outrageous things, over and over again. No spotlights on that. But any possible misstep by a Republican becomes national news.
It’s obviously very unfair. It’s also stone-cold reality. So Republicans have to play it smart. All the time.

The story was leaked. If anybody out there has a publishable book, find out who Noem’s agent and publisher are and boycott them. They don’t deserve to stay in business with such shoddy ethics.
It is not a deal breaker for me either. My biggest issue is her judgment in telling the story in the first place. It just sounds “mean,” and at least half of the electorate is primarily ruled by their feelings.

PS - If you own dogs that you care about and live near a cattle farm, do not let your dogs trespass onto it and chase cattle. You won't like what happens next.

My congressman years ago blamed the Mainstream Media for reporting on the fundraiser for him featuring John Boehner.
It didn’t change the fact that he kissed up to RINO Speaker John Boehner.
The congressman trying to distract back then and Kristi Noem is doing nothing different than what he did back then.
99% of the dogs dropped off at pounds are euthanized within hours because the pounds are so overwhelmed.
Dropping it off at the pound does not absolve you.
I had a friend who worked at the local pound because he loved animals. About the only thing he did was bring dogs from the front door to the back room and euthanize them. His girlfriend worked there too. Sadly, it affected her so much she committed suicide by jumping off a bluff.
As you said, if a dog needs to be put down, put it down yourself. Don't make other people do it.
We could use a gal like that.

I am fine with this, and saving money and time.
She is prudent and like my family and friends, growing up on farms.
And the media has piled on by calling an adult dog a puppy.
But perhaps her ranch mentality hasn’t been sufficiently tempered with an understanding of broader American sensibilities.
(Romney has no such explanation for his torture of the family dog.)
