I simply don’t travel by air anymore, tired of airports, delays, cancellations everything. When I did travel, one time I checked a Martin guitar and it was never found. A $5,000 guitar that just disappeared. The one or two times I did travel with a guitar after that I literally bought another ticket so my guitar could rest in the seat next to me.

A $5,000 guitar that just disappeared. Wow. Just sad. Absolutely terrible.
I feel blessed that I have not had things stolen while traveling.

I spent some time around performing musicians. Travel gigs were always a concern when your livelihood is in the hands of thieves. The older guys knew to have a backup plan at the destination in case their instrument(s) "disappeared".
Pickup gigs with only a few days to prepare, travel and play and get-out can be really stressful. Like you, those with instruments of exceptional value would buy another ticket and never let it out of your sight. Sorry for your misfortune.

I literally bought another ticket so my guitar could rest in the seat next to me. You're not alone ... I once shared a 3-seat with a nice young lady and her Cello.
