China has responded to the new U.S. House bill passed against TikTok, and it doesn't look like it's going to make the U.S.-Sino relationship any better. While the measure still has to wind its way through the Senate, it would essentially ban the platform for all Americans unless TikTok's operations were divested from Chinese parent firm ByteDance (BDNCE). The formal name of the bill, titled the "Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act," also likely riled Beijing, which was quick to lay out its position and accuse Washington of "resorting to acts of bullying."
Quote: "Though the U.S. has never found any evidence of TikTok posing a threat to U.S. national security, it has never stopped going after TikTok," said Wang Wenbin, spokesman for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "Such practice of resorting to hegemonic moves when one could not succeed in fair competition disrupts the normal operation of businesses, undermines the confidence of international investors in the investment environment, and sabotages the normal economic and trade order in the world. This will inevitably come back to backfire on the United States itself."
Speaking of fair competition, Beijing does not allow any U.S. social media companies to operate in China, though there appears to be something bigger here at play. It revolves around the significant policy shift in how to deal with China and the evaluation of what capabilities should be ascribed to the CCP. What started as a crusade against intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices has morphed into accusations of mass surveillance and the ability to influence an entire generation of American youth. That doesn't mean the threat isn't real or isn't happening, especially given the danger of a new global order,

What if they just banned the collection of metadata? I know that would be a huge demonetizaion blow to the social media companies, but I could’ve with that.
From what I can see, TikTok is mainly a collection of cat videos and videos of Only Fans whores advertising themselves. Is it a good thing? No. Is it some kind of national security threat? Doubtful. Is it mostly stupid? Yes. And THAT is the threatening part.
That said, without it, I might not have discovered MrGo30. Football season wouldn’t be the same.
Should have been banned many years ago. At this point it is like trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. They already have a significant profile of the behavior of the West to get an AI profile to predict actions before they are even taken. It doesn’t just track the information given via the app, it tracks everything else as well.
Probably best overall to avoid putting social media apps on phones and just use your computer for that.

What does national security have to do with “the market”?

Now that is a very legitimate concern. The stated purpose of bills is many times not all that the bill does (if it even does that) and may contain a lot more than meets the eye.
Banning foreign spyware designed to create a social profile of the population of an adversary should not be allowed. But what does this bill actually do?
Shhhhhh!
Like the people who claimed that we couldn't "KNOW" that the spy balloon was Chinese when the Chinese were throwing a fit over our shooting it down you must not bring logic and reason into the conversation about the delightful spyware known as Chi-Com.
Perhaps this November or election years in future an American president shuts down Fox News or Tucker Carlson or the Feds retaliate against Elon Musk and force him to sell it at a huge loss getting rid of Tik Tok might be a good thing but the long term consequences are likely to be obscene
Your proof of that is.....?
The content is not the national security issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_fyz5rOwFc
Albeit the content is indeed destabilizing to civilization in of itself.
Pfft! It’s all manner of American lefties. Or are you claiming the CCP is paying them all?
Tik Tok has nothing to do with national security. And besides, if you give up freedom for security, you’re a damned idiot.
Them all? No.
Just three or four with a good following is all that is necessary.
And with AI they can spread their propaganda all over the net.
Kids! Eat Tide Pods!
Kids! Cook chicken in NyQuil!.
Kids! Cut your genitals off!
Men! Get a vasectomy!
Women! Cut your uterus out!
Everyone is doing it!
You want to think that quite a bit of this is not coming out of China that is your privilege I suppose. I am sure that land of poisoned toothpaste and lethal pet food is as pure as the driven snow.
