Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Last night the Sverdlov Ammunition plant in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Russia, was attacked by UAVs. Coordinates:

56°16'6.29"N, 43°22'43.93"E

People on the ground report that 14 UAVs were in the vicinity with 7 hitting the plant. Footages show rather large explosions coming directly from the facility. The results if the strikes remain yet to be seen.

The Sverdlov plant is an industrial behemoth. It is 16 square kilometers (6 square miles) in size and comprises of the production facility and extensive storage areas. It is located more than 760 km (480 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Next to Dzerzhinsk, which btw, is one of dirtiest Russian cities, is the 53rd GRAU arsenal. This is a target-rich environment.

“drones attacked... the (Russian munitions) Sverdlov Plant... part of Russia’s military-industrial complex.”

Additionally, as the Kyiv Independent reports:

“Russian electronics plant reportedly on fire after drone strike in Bryansk

“The “Kremniy El” microelectronics plant caught fire in the Russian city of Bryansk following a Ukrainian drone strike overnight on Oct. 19, Russian and Ukrainian media reported.

“Kremniy EL” is one of the largest microelectronics plants in Russia that produces components widely used in Russian defense production, including for Pantsir air defense systems and Iskander missile systems.

The plant is located over 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) north of the border with Ukraine’s northern Sumy Oblast. It was attacked at least once before, in August 2023.

The Russian Defense Ministry said its air defense had downed 13 Ukrainian drones over Bryansk Oblast, six over Belgorod Oblast, two over Rostov Oblast, and one over Belgorod Oblast overnight. Later in the morning, the ministry reported four more drones downed over Bryansk Oblast by the Russian air defense.

Russian media published videos shot by local residents of at least one explosion and smoke plumes rising over the factory.

Bryansk Oblast Governor Alexander Bogomaz reported the fire in a “non-residential building” following the Ukrainian attack, claiming that it was put out by the Russian emergency workers. He reported no casualties.

Later in the morning, Bogomaz claimed another “non-residential building” was hit in the second attack of Ukrainian drones on Oct. 19.”

That is saying a lot.

If it is dirty by Russian standards, it is world class contaminated.

As I've split my Russian cities "travel guide" into a myriad of different threads and posts, I've decided to finally gather them all in one place (mostly so I can have something to pin on my profile).

“Moldova cleared a crucial hurdle as part of its bid to join the European Union in a set of votes on Sunday, after turnout passed the level required for the result of a referendum to be valid.

Some 42% of voters participated in the plebiscite as of 6 p.m. local time, exceeding the one-third threshold required to validate the ballot, the Central Electoral Commission said. That means the country is likely to back EU membership, since polls show a majority of Moldovans are in favor.

The nation is also holding a presidential election, in which the pro-European incumbent Maia Sandu is favored to win a second term.”

"France has recovered €300M from the interest on frozen Russian assets to provide military equipment to Ukraine..."

Perhaps some of the €300M can be spent on South Korean weapons & ammo.

While the North Korean intervention in Russia's war against Ukraine exposed once again Western appeasement, it overshadowed something much more important. The Republic of Korea (South Korea) is a military and technological power house. Seoul always observes what the hostile neighbor in the North does and unlike the West, South Korea is for obvious reasons fully devoted in its cold war thinking process.

What that means can be summarized quite easily. Whatever North Korea does, it will be countered with a South Korean gambit. Seoul fully understands that a Russian win in Ukraine would mean a North Korean win. This won't be accepted in Seoul and unlike many other countries, South Korea has the means to do so. The list of potential weapons, which can be used to help Ukraine, is longer than Putin's table. From artillery shells and systems, over air defense assets and MLRS up to equipment for electronic warfare, everything what is needed for the war in Ukraine can be procured and especially produced in serial production in South Korea. Several countries such as Poland, Norway, Finland, Indonesia and more are lining up to get their hands on South Korean hardware, such as the K9 Thunder, and thanks to the fact that South Korea never left the Cold War, it maintained an industry which is capable of serial production while keeping up to technological edge. This enables South Korea to offer advanced military hardware for a lower price.

As mentioned in my post yesterday, Putin is tacticians, but a lousy strategist. His alliance with North Korea comes out of desperation. Almost half of all fired Russian artillery shells are originally from North Korea, and their quality is abysmal. For North Korea this alliance is much more beneficial. But it comes for a huge price, for both. South Korea will certainly not sit idle and will move against this unholy alliance. This means that Ukraine and South Korea will get closer. The war in Ukraine offers for South Korea's military industry and unique opportunity to test their weapon systems, which already are considered one of the best in the world.

So watch this space for what is about to come, and soon.

BRICS, RICKS, DICKS

“Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled a planned trip to Russia on Sunday for an annual BRICS summit after suffering a head injury at his home the day prior.

The 78-year-old president was treated at a hospital on Saturday after cutting his head in an accident at his residence in Brasilia, according to medical records released by the government on Sunday. The doctors who evaluated Lula recommended he avoid long-distance travel but said he could carry out the rest of his duties. No other details about the accident were provided.”

If interpreted correctly, I believe the Russian said it was worse than Mariupol and he had been there. I wonder if he meant before or after Russia destroyed Matiupol?

⚔️ NATO commander in Europe Christopher Cavoli: "Russia suffered losses in Ukraine, rather large losses.

But the Russian armed forces study, improve and implement the experience of war.

At the end of the war in Ukraine, no matter how it looks, the Russian army will be stronger than it is today.

These forces will be on the border of our alliance.

They are commanded by the same people who already see us as enemies and will later be dissatisfied with the way the war went.

So we will have an opponent with real skills, a mass of troops and clear intentions."

“I wonder if he meant before or after Russia destroyed Matiupol?”

He probably meant after, because Mariupol itself was quite nice. But just on the Eastern edge of Mariupol is a giant heavy industry steel plant (Azovstal).

Russia destroyed or damaged nearly 90% of the housing stock in Mariupol, and imposed a KGB hell on the residents, with torture chambers and mobile crematorium trucks.

“the Russian army will be stronger than it is today”

I think his intended point was not clearly stated. I believe he was pointing out that after the war stops, Russia is likely to rearm (not that they will get stronger from today, while this war is still dragging on).

They are depleted now, and getting worse, but after a few years of post-war re-arming, they will likely amass another significant threat.

They have the intent, and could rebuild their capability - they likely will prioritize it, with the ruling clique that they have. They have already significantly expanded their authorized permanent force structure each of the last three years.

Strategically, it would help if they are economically starved of surplus resources after the war, to constrain their re-armament.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, October 19, 2024

The Russian government may increase defense spending in 2024 beyond the previously allocated amount. Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov claimed on October 19 that the Russian government may spend an additional 1.5 trillion rubles (about $16 billion) in 2024 in addition to what the Russian government already allocated for the federal budget in part due to the needs of the Russian war effort in Ukraine.[58] Siluanov claimed that the Russian government needs additional funds to subsidize banks, service the public debt, and meet the additional needs of the Russian MoD and law enforcement agencies due to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The Russian MoD continues to propose benefits incentivizing voluntary participation in Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Russian MoD submitted a draft resolution on October 18 proposing to issue combat veteran status to volunteers participating in the war in Ukraine from the beginning of their participation.[59] The draft resolution would not require a volunteer to submit an application to Russian military authorities to obtain combat veteran status but would require the military unit conducting the recruitment to submit the volunteer’s information to Russian authorities. This is likely part of ongoing efforts by Russian authorities to incentivize voluntary recruitment and to minimize the need to conduct an unpopular wave of involuntary mobilization.

Russian authorities for the first time revoked the Russian citizenship of migrants who failed to register for Russian military service. The Khabarovsk Krai Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) announced on October 19 that it revoked the Russian citizenship of three Tajik migrants who had failed to register for military service in Russia.[60] Russian legislators passed a bill in August 2024 allowing the Russian government to terminate the naturalized citizenship of migrants who do not immediately register for military service.[61]
