Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

“Also, no communications between ground troops and CAS aircraft/helos.”

Apparently, Russia has reverted to form in its response, just like early in the war, ordering Battalion Tactical Groups to attack, largely on their own. (Everybody! Pile on! Charge at your own pace and direction!) This time however, several things are different.

These Russian “Battalions” sent to halt the Ukrainian advance (about a dozen at last report) are basically half strength units that were reconstituting in the rear (including the 155th Naval Infantry, going for the record of the most destroyed and reconstituted unit of the war). A lot of poorly trained new guys, that hardly know their jobs, equipment or each other; much less the units to their left or right. Skill levels (like coordinating CAS) are low to non-existent.

Unlike earlier in the war, Ukrainian forces are not in fixed defensive positions, that allowed Artillery and Aviation to pretty much support the maneuver forces without even coordinating with them. They could just generally pepper some pre-defined grid squares, ahead of the one same road that each BTG was sent down. Now it is a fluid, moving mixed up mess. Fratricide among Russians was high then, it is likely going to be fairly huge now.

Maybe the Ukrainians will just run riot through the Russian rear, like Patton or Sherman, tearing up their logistics, and cutting off large Russian elements.

I am interested to see if drones provide significant force multiplier effects, and are able to replace some of the firepower that requires a heavy logistics tail (or high risk, like CAS), with faster and lighter forces achieving the same effects.

The terrain of Kursk is amenable to large scale maneuver warfare - which was a reason it became the field of the biggest/deadliest battle in the history of warfare.

From Wikipedia:

“The Battle of Kursk was a major World War II Eastern Front battle between the forces of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union near Kursk in southwestern Russia during the summer of 1943 (beginning on 5 July), resulting in a Soviet victory. The Battle of Kursk was the single largest battle in the history of warfare.... the opening day of the battle, 5 July, being the single costliest day in the history of aerial warfare. The battle was also marked by fierce house-to-house fighting and hand-to-hand combat...

...The Soviet government had foreknowledge of the German intentions, provided in part by British intelligence’s analysis of high-level German army radio messages...

...Because the Allied invasion of Sicily began during the battle, Adolf Hitler was forced to divert troops training in France to meet the Allied threat in the Mediterranean, rather than using them as a strategic reserve for the Eastern Front. As a result, Hitler cancelled the offensive at Kursk after only a week, in part to divert forces to Italy...

...Germany’s extensive losses of men and tanks ensured that the victorious Soviet Red Army enjoyed the strategic initiative for the remainder of the war. The Battle of Kursk was the first time in the Second World War that a German strategic offensive was halted before it could break through enemy defences and penetrate to its strategic depths. Though the Red Army had succeeded in winter offensives previously, their counter-offensives after the German attack at Kursk were their first successful summer offensives of the war. The battle has been called the “last gasp of Nazi aggression”.

1000. Do I hear 2000?

“We now control about 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory - Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi.

Today, President Zelenskyy held a meeting of the Headquarters of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, where, for the first time, he officially mentioned the operation in the Kursk region.

“The most important thing - there was a report by Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi on our defensive actions at the front and the operation in Kursk region. We are grateful to all soldiers and commanders for their resilience and decisive actions,” he said.

Oleksandr Syrskyi added that “the situation is under our control.””

Sorry about that. It was an accident.

“Beijing has admitted that a Chinese-owned ship damaged a critical Baltic Sea gas pipeline running between Estonia and Finland last October, but says it was an accident.

The South China Morning Post understands that the Chinese authorities conducted an internal investigation and recently communicated the results to governments in the European countries.”

“Authorities in the two EU member states have said that the ship dragged its anchor along the seabed, slicing through a crucial gas cable and also damaging two telecoms cables running between the two countries on the night of October 7 or morning of October 8.”

If this kind of law and order breakdown is widespread, it will be interesting to see how far ahead of the Ukraine advances it develops. Might it forecast a great deal more law and order breakdown throughout Russia?

Bravo to Paris. One of the great cities of the world.

“France Wins Over Skeptics With Olympic Games That Showcase Paris”

“As Tom Cruise rappelled from the roof of Paris’s Stade de France on Sunday night to seize the Olympic flag and pass it on to Los Angeles for the next Games, the French officials watching could finally breath a sigh of relief.

After years of preparations and a great deal of skepticism — most notably from Parisians themselves — the first Olympic Games in the French capital in a century had blossomed into a popular success. A record 9.5 million tickets were sold for contests held across the city, often beside the city’s famous monuments.

A week before the Games kicked off, two-thirds of the French said they were either indifferent, worried or angry about the Olympics, according to an Ifop poll.

On the morning of the opening ceremony, sabotage of the country’s high-speed train lines affected hundreds of thousands of travelers, as if confirming the public’s worst fears. The ceremony that kicked off the Games, complete with a flotilla of boats carrying the athletes down the Seine river, took place under a disheartening downpour.

But the French loved the show and the mood changed overnight, as athletes won their first medals in spectacular venues showcasing the Eiffel Tower and the Versailles Palace. Even the swimming events in the Seine, following the city’s costly cleanup of the waterway, took place — though some were postponed to allow bacteria to fall to safe levels. It didn’t hurt that French athletes won a record number of medals.

A lot of what could have gone wrong didn’t. Metro lines ran smoothly, and were less crowded than feared after many Parisians fled to the countryside. And no major security issues in Paris spoiled the event, perhaps owing to the thousands of highly visible police and military personnel patrolling the city.”

Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal turn up in Kiev, talking up more weapons and more Kursk incursion.

The visit is terrible optics for the USA, as Russia will view the timing of this visit to reinforce the belief that the Collective West was ultimately behind the Kursk… pic.twitter.com/MWHl8wtoJc— Alex Christoforou (@AXChristoforou) August 12, 2024

The Collective West

“Facing a Ukrainian Incursion, Putin Directs His Rage at the West “

“President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia lashed out at the West over Ukraine’s weeklong incursion into Russian territory, in a tense televised meeting with his top officials on Monday, a sign of how the surprise attack has unsettled the Kremlin.

Ukraine’s move has had two main goals, analysts said: to draw Russian forces from the front lines in eastern Ukraine and to seize territory that could serve as a bargaining chip in future peace negotiations.”
