Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine (2 year anniversary)

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

I wonder if the Earthquake/tsunami on Russia’s Pacific nuke sub base has anything to do with President Trump’s new nuclear saber rattling? Maybe the balance of nuclear capability/readiness has shifted enough to influence Russian decisionmakers (on top of their bomber losses in Operation Spiderweb, and massive data breach on all their nuke facilities).

Other areas further from the epicenter saw 5 meter high tsunamis, which would imply higher waves at the base, but the sub base may have been protected somewhat by the shape of the bay, or underwater geography. 3-5 meter tsunamis would be expected to induce damage, and the short (15 minute) delay between the main quake and resulting tsunami would have given crews and base personnel little time to take any protective measures.

Kyiv Independent (1 Aug):

Russian nuclear submarine base hit by tsunami, satellite images reveal

“Russia’s nuclear submarine base in the country’s Far East appears to have been hit by the powerful tsunami that swept the Pacific on July 30, according to satellite imagery seen by the Telegraph and published Aug. 1...

...The waves reportedly hit the Rybachiy naval base, which houses the bulk of the nuclear submarines in Russia’s Pacific Fleet, according to images taken by the Umbra Space satellite the morning after the tsunami.

The base is believed to have been hit within 15 minutes of the earthquake.

The images show that a section of a pier at the base has bent away from its original position, suggesting it may have been detached from its moorings. While damage to the structure itself has little military significance, it is unclear how much damage the base may have sustained overall.

“If the base assumption is that a wave got in there and bent that jetty then yes, what else did it do?” Retired Royal Navy Commander Tom Sharpe told the Telegraph.

Dr. Sidharth Kaushal, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), cautioned that there is no evidence of damage to any submarines.

“It looks like it was a surface ship that was moored at the pier rather than a submarine, which is noteworthy. I’m not sure we can really ascertain more than that a pier was damaged,” he said in comments to the Telegraph.

Russia’s Rybachiy base is home to the majority of the nuclear submarines in Moscow’s Pacific Fleet. The vessels are critical to Russia’s nuclear deterrence strategy in the Pacific, as they are stationed closer to the U.S. than any other submarines except those on forward deployment.

The reported damage to the base comes shortly before U.S. President Donald Trump ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed “to appropriate regions” in response to nuclear saber-rattling from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.”

“What will China do?” (when faced with Bone-Crushing Sanctions, or substituting Russian oil supply)

Like Russia, I guess they will try to find some way to give lip service to avoid the sanction tariff, while trying to covertly circumvent the restriction and smuggle oil. We will soon see - D-Day is next Friday, August 8th.

No doubt this is a big point in ongoing trade talks between the USA and China - the 800 lb gorilla in the room, with a deadline next week.

Saudi Arabia, however, would really benefit from a little oil price shock, and pumping a bunch more volume.

OilPrice.com (1 Aug):

OPEC+ Nears Decision Point on Next Oil Output Hike

“OPEC+ is inching toward a pivotal decision this weekend: whether to greenlight another 548,000 bpd in production hikes for September, effectively fast-tracking the return of 2.2 million bpd in voluntary cuts a year ahead of schedule.

The Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC) already met last week and stopped short of recommending any fresh changes to quotas. But that was never really its job—it’s the full ministerial gathering this Sunday that holds the power to formalize the next move. Traders expecting September’s barrels to hit the water soon may finally get the clarity they’ve been waiting for.”

"Have not seen any sat video of base , if you have a link I would appreciate it"

The Telegraph want's an email address to view this article, but you can see the first picture without it: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2025/08/01/russian-nuclear-submarine-base-earthquake-satellite/ (The one pier that detached)

There was cloud cover the first day after the quake, but more should come out. Another poster asked if there was monitoring for radiation, which would also be interesting.

Here is a background on the base (prior to the earthquake), showing the partial protection from tsunami from the shape of the bay.

This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpFKiVF6bCM

discusses analysis by Tatarigami on X, about impact to the base.

We will probably have to wait a few days for Intel to dribble in.

Another point to consider, that I heard from Paul Warburg on YouTube, is that the nuke submarines at that base were not only a threat/deterrent against the USA, but also against China. China’s dominance vs. Russia continues to grow.

Because Putin screwed up.

Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment, August 1, 2025

US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of two US nuclear submarines closer to Russia presumably in response to Russian Security Council Deputy Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev’s July 31 nuclear threats against the United States. Trump stated on August 1 that he ordered American military authorities to position two US nuclear submarines “in the appropriate regions” following Medvedev’s “highly provocative statements.”[1] Trump stated that he gave the order “just in case [the] foolish and inflammatory statements [from Medvedev] are more than just that.” Trump previously stated on July 31 that Medvedev should “watch his words” and is “entering very dangerous territory.”[2] Medvedev responded to Trump on July 31 on both his English- and Russian-language Telegram accounts and threatened that Russia is “doing everything right” and will continue along its own path.[3] Medvedev also alluded to Russia's automatic or semi-automatic nuclear weapons control system, referred to as the “Dead Hand” or the “Perimeter,” in response to Trump. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio answered a journalist's question on July 31 about Medvedev’s nuclear threat, stating that one cannot ignore Medvedev’s statement.[4] Rubio stated that Medvedev is not a “relevant decision maker,” but he still has a role in the Russian government, so “his words are going to have impact” as a “provocateur.”

The Kremlin continued its nuclear threats against the United States prior to the ordered deployment of US nuclear submarines on August 1 – demonstrating that Medvedev’s threats are part of a wider Kremlin nuclear saber-rattling campaign. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko spoke to journalists on August 1 in a likely staged event to publicly promote the Kremlin's narratives and stances about its war in Ukraine.[5] Lukashenko criticized Trump's recent efforts to bring Russia to the negotiating table and find a way to end the war. Lukashenko claimed that Trump must act “carefully” and that it is not possible for Trump to “dictate the rules” during the ongoing military clash, “especially to a nuclear power” like Russia.[6] Kremlin officials and their affiliates often use nuclear saber-rattling as part of their reflexive control campaign that aims to push the West to make decisions that benefit Russia.[7] The Kremlin had also repeatedly used staged interactions with Lukashenko to deliver indirect nuclear threats.[8] Medvedev’s July 31 nuclear threats are also part of these reflexive control efforts, as Putin often leverages Medvedev to amplify inflammatory rhetoric designed to stoke panic and fear among Western decision-makers and discourage aid to Ukraine.[9] ISW continues to assess that Medvedev’s provocative and threatening statements are very likely part of a top-down, concerted Kremlin informational strategy.[10] Putin would be able to censor Medvedev’s statements should Putin choose to do so, especially considering that the Kremlin coordinates official statements and controls the Russian information space, internet, and media.

Limited Russian milblogger responses to Trump's August 1 announcement criticized Trump, attempted to downplay the threat, or called on Russia to respond in kind. Russian milbloggers noted that Trump did not specify exactly where the US submarines were deploying, implying that Trump's statement could be a feint.[11] One milblogger claimed that Trump's announcement is not leading to Trump's desired peace.[12] Russian political scientist Sergei Markov claimed that Trump is “losing his sanity” and that Trump's announcement endorses Medvedev’s allegation that Trump was moving closer to nuclear war.[13] Another milblogger called for Russian ships and submarines equipped with nuclear weapons to “pay a friendly visit to Cuba again.”[14] Russian naval vessels, including a reportedly nuclear weapons-capable ship, made a port call in Cuba in June 2024, likely in order to invoke the historical memory of the Cuban Missile Crisis as part of Russia's reflexive control campaign to instill fear in the West and push the West to make decisions that benefit Russia.[15]

Putin and Lukashenko highlighted recent Russian advances in Donetsk Oblast and articulated Russia's desire to seize Ukraine's fortress belt – which ISW continues to assess will constitute a multi-year long effort. Putin claimed that Russian forces recently seized Chasiv Yar, although Putin acknowledged that Russian forces are still clearing the town and that Ukrainian forces may counterattack into Chasiv Yar in the future.[36] Putin claimed that Chasiv Yar is “quite a large settlement,” although 2022 census data states that Chasiv Yar had a pre-war population of 12,500 people.[37] Russian state media and milbloggers are attempting to oversell the seizure of Chasiv Yar as a significant development along the frontline, and Putin appears to be leaning into this effort.[38] Lukashenko further claimed that Chasiv Yar is “the road” to Kramatorsk, which Lukashenko called the center of Ukraine's defense (referring to Ukraine's fortress belt - a series of fortified cities that form the backbone of Ukraine's defensive positions in Donetsk Oblast).[39] Lukashenko claimed that Russian forces will “slowly gnaw” at, seize, and advance beyond Ukraine's fortress belt. Putin responded that Russian forces will “return” the fortress belt, which Putin claimed belongs to Russia. Lukashenko claimed that Ukraine should quickly ask Russia to negotiate an end to the war before Russia seizes the fortress belt. ISW has long assessed that Russian forces aspire to seize Ukraine's fortress belt, and Putin's statement marks the most recent high-level Russian confirmation of this intention.[40]

Putin's desire to seize Ukraine's fortress belt indicates that he is willing to continue military operations in Ukraine long beyond Trump's stated August 8 deadline for peace in Ukraine and is ready to undertake complex, years-long operations. ISW previously noted that a Russian operation to seize Ukraine's fortress belt will be a significant undertaking, as Russian forces will have to seize Siversk and Lyman, advance through the Svyati Hori national park, and contend with the Siverskyi Donets River and Siverskyi Donets Donbas canal before Russian forces can even begin to threaten Slovyansk (the northern tip of the fortress belt).[41] Russian forces are currently expanding their salient southwest of Kostyantynivka (the southern tip of the fortress belt) in order to support a future attack on or envelopment of Kostyantynivka and the wider fortress belt from the southwest, but seizing Kostyantynivka alone will likely be a months-long effort. A Kremlin-affiliated milblogger recently noted that it took Russian forces 14 months to seize Chasiv Yar and that Kostyantynivka is roughly three times larger than Chasiv Yar - underscoring how long a frontal Russian assault into Kostyantynivka could last.[42] Russian forces attempted to encircle Ukraine's fortress belt in Spring 2022 but culminated while trying to conduct the over 55-kilometer-wide encirclement.[43] Russian forces have conducted several successful, smaller partial envelopments since seizing Avdiivka in February 2024, but Russian forces have yet to conduct a successful operational-level envelopment of a significant Ukrainian defensive line.[44] ISW previously noted that it is unlikely that the Russian military can sustain a multi-year and multi-axis operation against Ukraine's fortress belt alongside its other offensive operations in Ukraine, particularly after three and a half years of degrading combat operations.[45] Putin appears confident in the Russian military's and economy's strength and longevity, however, given his August 1 endorsement of seizing the fortress belt and Russia's current rate of advance in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be transforming Russia into a Soviet-style police state, likely in preparation for expected anti-war sentiment in the Russian population as the Kremlin prolongs the war in Ukraine and prepares for a future war with NATO. Putin signed amendments on July 31 that introduce fines for “intentional” searches of “extremist” content on virtual private networks (VPNs) and ”violating the procedure” for using VPN services.[50] Putin also signed a law that expands the offenses for which Russian authorities can revoke acquired citizenship, including the “justification or propaganda of terrorism,” cooperation with a foreign state against the security of Russia, “unlawful influence” on Russia's information space, and the implementation of decisions of “international organizations in which Russia does not participate.”[51] The Kremlin has vaguely defined “extremism,” and the law about citizenship revocation similarly contains vaguely defined language. The Kremlin has and will exploit this vagueness to censor any information that it considers a threat, including anti-war and anti-regime sentiment.

The Russian government has been slowly consolidating control over the Russian population's access to independent information throughout Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin will likely ban WhatsApp and replace it with the Kremlin-controlled messaging platform MAX in the near future, and Kremlin officials will likely attempt to replace other independent communication platforms, such as Telegram, with state-controlled communication platforms.[52] The Kremlin has also targeted media outlets that publish anti-war sentiment and counter the Kremlin's preferred narrative in the information space.[53]

The Russian government is also slowly adapting its legal regime to increase the state's ability to repress and coerce Russians into conceding to state narratives and ideas, like the Soviet Union's attempts at controlling the population. The Russian State Duma adopted in recent months legal definitions that allow Russia to criminally prosecute Kremlin opponents by classifying domestic opposition as a threat to Russian national security.[54] The Russian government may be pursuing these informational and legal constraints in preparation for possible future societal backlash, as Putin appears willing to continue the war for years to come. The Kremlin's measures to cut Russian society off from the outside world are also part of efforts to indoctrinate Russians into an informal state ideology that, at its foundation, is anti-Western and anti-Ukrainian and to militarize Russian society ahead of a longer war in Ukraine and a possible future war with NATO.[55]

In Moscow, there is increasing talk of Aliyev’s removal

The Kremlin is very irritated by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Azerbaijan . In particular, by the fact that it has not yet been possible to find a way to resolve the situation. “Azerbaijan is a small republic. Why are we messing around with them? Well, they shot down a plane, anything can happen. They would have paid and that's it. No! They are mocking us, demanding an admission of guilt. They call Kaliningrad Königsberg,” says a source in the Kremlin from among the “hawks.”

Another source from among the seasoned generals notes: “We don't have time to be distracted by minor conflicts now. If a person (Ilham Aliyev - Ed.) does not understand, then we can remove him.” The authorities have officially refused to comment on this scenario.

How does the inspection on the Crimean Bridge work: what you need to know.

The queue on the Crimean Bridge on August 2 reached 2,984 cars — 1,789 from Taman and 1,195 from Kerch. The waiting time for inspection exceeds three hours after the night traffic closure. The authorities recommend preparing documents in advance and packing luggage compactly to speed up the inspection. Only cars, pickups and buses are allowed to cross the bridge; trucks will have to choose detours. To speed up the inspection, it is recommended to prepare documents in advance: passport (or its number in the “Gosuslugi” application), driver's license and STS. Documents are checked selectively or in a continuous manner to check against search databases; information about military service and debts is not requested. On the bridge, they do not require a power of attorney for children, an OSAGO policy, documents and vaccinations for animals, and they do not check tinting, gas equipment and child seats - these issues are resolved outside the bridge area.

It is allowed to carry up to 100 liters of liquids and up to five 25 kg bags of bulk materials. Owners of hunting or traumatic weapons must report this for license verification. It is allowed to carry radios, subwoofers, gas canisters, stun guns and sporting weapons without restrictions. Drones can be transported, but their use in Crimea is prohibited.

The Crimean Bridge is prohibited for trucks, semi-trailers, all-metal vans and tow trucks, regardless of their weight and category - the restriction applies to all vehicles with the “truck” mark in the documents. An exception is made only for pickups such as “Largus”, “Caddy”, VIS and vehicles with special passes. The Ministry of Transport recommends planning trips on Tuesdays or Wednesdays when traffic is minimal, and leaving early in the morning or at night.

To receive up-to-date information about inspections, it is worth subscribing to the official Crimean Bridge informer, as well as joining tourist chats where the rules of passage and the traffic situation are discussed. For questions and complaints, you can contact the Crimean Bridge hotline: +7 (499) 495-00-11.

According to imagery from July 31, analyzed by Frontelligence Insight, seven Russian nuclear submarine remained in port during the recent earthquake and tsunami. No significant damage to the submarine was observed; the only visible damage appears to be a detached floating pier.

The left image, taken July 31, shows a section, likely a floating pier, highlighted in orange, drifting in the bay detached from the main structure. For comparison, the right image (September 19, 2023) shows the pier in its usual position.

The damage appears minimal and is unlikely to seriously affect the base. While seismic activity may have caused unseen damage, it's important to note that Soviet facilities of this importance were designed to withstand direct military impacts.

If you follow the tracks back to the starting point, you get an approximate position for Ukrainian counterattacks.

❗️Also, the 🇷🇺Russian military airfield in Primorsky-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Krai, was probably attacked at night - the NASA FIRMS fire map shows a number of thermal anomalies on its territory

The Russians launch their Shahed and Gerbera drones from this airfield.
