Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When a vehicle is captured and then lost in service with its new owners, it is only added as a loss of the original operator to avoid double listings. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it's not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available.

Kyiv Post Reports:

“Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State under former President Donald Trump, said Monday (19 Feb) that Ukraine can be optimistic about US assistance, despite the $60 billion in US military aid for Ukraine currently being stalled in Congress...

...Pompeo said that were former President Donald Trump reelected this year, it would not necessarily mean the diminishment of US support for Ukraine.

“Don’t let the media deceive you. Let the reality set in. Let the reality of the Trump administration and its policy towards Ukraine suggest to you what the second Trump administration looks like,” Pompeo said.

“Which administration was the first administration to provide defensive weapons systems to this country? It was not the Obama administration. Indeed, it was the Obama administration that was unable to deter Vladimir Putin from taking a fifth of your country. It was the Trump administration that for four years deterred Vladimir Putin,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo said that in the conversation about Russia’s war against Ukraine, politicians rarely talk about victory.

“We collectively must win. We have to win. We have to win in a way that decisively proves that our model, the model of the West, the model of the people of Ukraine, the model of the people of Europe, the model of the people of America, and those who believe in human dignity and property rights, and all of the things that have made America so successful for 250 years, we have to demonstrate that that’s the victorious model,” he said.

For the last month (since 21 January), the Russian Ruble has shown an extremely unusual trading pattern - indicating extremely intense market intervention, or some automated transaction pattern. (https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=CNY&to=RUB )

My guess is that the Central Bank of Russia is going all in before the March 17th Presidential election, to stabilize the ruble, just like the Military went all in in Avdiivka, to achieve Putin’s political objectives.

After the election, there are reports (PIF posted at #677) of major tax hikes across the board on incomes being prepared for after the election, to pay for the war.

I’d also expect further mobilization, and a fall in the ruble as well (at some point this year, likely by Summer). More sanctions seem likely, especially after Putin’s brutal assassination of Alexi Navalny (May God rest his soul).

Economic and financial pressures continue accumulating, and effects that have been kicked down the road until after the election, will come snapping back then, like an accordion effect. We keep approaching higher stress levels, where things will eventually break.

“Russia Loses Appeal Against $50 Billion Payout to Ex-Yukos Shareholders”

Let’s seize a few (more) mountains of Russian assets.

For perspective, before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia’s 2021 Defense budget was about $66 Billion.

OilPrice.com reports:

“The Amsterdam Court of Appeal rejected on Tuesday Russia’s final argument in an appeals case against an arbitration award in which Moscow has to pay $50 billion to the former shareholders of Yukos for deliberately bankrupting Russia’s biggest oil firm in the early 2000s and prosecuting its CEO Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

The former shareholders of Yukos and the Russian state have been dragging the case through various courts in the Netherlands for over a decade.

Former Yukos owner and critic of the Kremlin, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, was arrested in 2003 and convicted of theft and tax evasion two years later. Yukos was broken up and sold off to state companies, including Rosneft. Khodorkovsky was released from jail in 2013 after Vladimir Putin pardoned him. Khodorkovsky is now in exile and lives in London.

In the meantime, former Yukos shareholders sued for compensation for the assets they lost, which they claim were expropriated by the Russian government.”

Sweden is so ready to be in NATO.

(Reuters) - “Sweden’s defence ministry said on Tuesday (20 Feb) the Nordic country will donate military aid to Ukraine worth some 7.1 billion Swedish crowns ($682 million), including the transfer of equipment and fresh cash for arms procurement.

It will be Sweden’s 15th round of aid for Ukraine and the Nordic country’s biggest such package to date, taking its overall aid since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 to around 30 billion crowns.

“We will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Defence Minister Pal Jonson told a press conference.

The package includes around 2 billion crowns worth of artillery ammunition as well as anti-aircraft artillery and recoilless rifles, Sweden said.

It also includes maritime assault vessels and other vessels, and underwater arms such as mines and subsea drones.”

Swedish CB90 Riverine combat boats - made to order, for supporting the Ukrainian bridgehead at Krynky.

Forbes reports: "(Sweden's) latest aid package is its biggest: $680 million worth of artillery shells, anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles and a whopping 30 riverine boats.

The consignment of boats includes 10 CB90 assault craft. The 52-foot CB90 is a riverine classic: thickly-armored and heavily-armed with three crew, space for 21 infantry and a top speed of 40 knots out to a distance of up to 240 miles...

...With their top-mounted remote guns laying down covering fire and their frontal armor shrugging off enemy small arms, a squadron of 10 CB90s could land a company of marines “with a degree of survivability for both the craft and embarked troops,” according to retired U.S. Navy officer Pete Pagano, writing in Proceedings, the professional journal of the U.S. fleet...

...The CB90s with their guns and armor should fare better against Russian drones than flimsier boats have done."

[ Ukrainians Break Behind Russian Lines And Bomb Them ]

==
Day 727: Feb 20

Today there is a lot of interesting news from the Bakhmut direction.

The most interesting event happened on the southern flank near Klischivka.

Ukrainians started engaging their aviation in this direction a few days ago, while now they launched a successful aerial incursion hitting Russian targets several kilometers behind the frontline.

Based on geolocated footage a Ukrainian Mi-8 helicopter managed to fly very close to Russian lines and fire a salvo of S-8 rockets at enemy positions 3 kilometers behind the frontline.

The helicopter maintained a low altitude and launched countermeasures. They contributed to preventing portable air-defense systems from shooting it down. If Ukrainians were targeting positions three kilometers behind the frontlines then they likely targeted forces concentrations.

It is not headquarters because in this case they would use HIMARS to destroy stationary targets. Force concentrations enable them to launch one wave after another, so a successful airstrike here should alleviate pressure on Klischiivka, which is good news.

When it comes to the northern flank the situation is much more difficult.

Last time we talked about this section of the front, Russian airborne forces managed to advance and occupy the small cemetery and a forest to the north of Ivanivske. Russians forces are trying to maintain the momentum and keep their advance towards Chasiv Yar.

Here, Ukrainian fighters reported that the enemy continued with their repeated attacks where extensive artillery and aerial bombardments combined with FPV drone strikes that were launched before the attacks which were undertaken by armored columns.

In the videos published by Russian forces we can see BMD-4 infantry fighting vehicles providing fire support while dismounting Russian infantry proceeded to assault Ukrainian positions.

Unfortunately for the Russians, many of these armored units found themselves targeted by Ukrainian FPV drone operators from the 42nd Mechanized Brigade that left many Russian vehicles destroyed around Berkhivka and Khromove before they even had a chance to engage the Ukrainians.

Ukrainians published videos showing how their anti-tank operators are taking out Russian tanks. Operators of Ukrainian made Stugna-P systems have a laptop-like panel wired to the AT system by up to 50 meters in distance, enabling the operators to acquire targets from the safety of their fortified position, away from the exposed AT system. Operators of First Border Guard Detachment took out the first Russian tank.

Right after that a 2nd one was destroyed by Territorial Defense and the 3rd one was disoriented and left abandoned. Moments later, drone operators were sent to finish off the remaining vehicles and their crews that attempted to escape.

Some sources claimed that Russians have entered Ivanivske and that fighting is taking place on the eastern edges of the village, but geolocated footage proves that Russians are only near the road to Ivanivske approximately 200 meters away from the farthest edge of the village.

Simultaneously, Russian sources claim to launch assaults at the hills to the north of Ivanivske, after they have capitalized on their advances in the forest, but so far we do not have any confirmations of any gains around here.

In the previous video I have stated that Ukrainians were pushed out of the forest by sheer number of attacks launched by Russians, one after the other.

As it turns out, based on geolocated footage, Ukrainians still control western edges of the small forest and a tree line behind it which links it to Chasiv Yar. This puts the distance of Russian forces from Chasiv Yar at some 1.90 kilometers.

When it comes to Chasiv Yar itself the town is the main hub for deployment and rotation of Ukrainian forces engaged in the Bakhmut direction which caused extensive Russian glide bomb strikes on the town, however Russian bombs seem to have inflicted the most damage to civilian homes.

The latest updates come from Bohdanivka direction. There are claims of intense clashes with a seven hundred meters deep advance by Russian forces.

However, military analysts from the Institute for the Study of War did not find any evidence of such claims. The Ukrainian Spokesperson for the Eastern Group of Forces, Captain Ilya Yevlash, stated that Russians are redeploying units from an unknown section of the frontline to assist in the assault on Bohdanivka.

This implies that Russians are sustaining heavy losses amid the repeated assaults on Bohdanivka.

If we look at the topographic map we can see that Bohdanivka is in the lowlands while the tactically important elevated areas around it are controlled by Ukrainians.

That puts Russian forces here at a very disadvantageous position, because Ukrainians can detect and destroy Russian units at an angle from which it is impossible to fire back or dislodge Ukrainians without a costly battle uphill.

In spite of all Russian progress and advances, Ukrainians maintain strong resistance and do not let any enemy gains without high cost in life, equipment and time while Ukrainians are preparing a defense in depth for the coming months.

And holding the line along Chasiv Yar is extremely important after the fall of Avdiivka, because Russian forces are planning a new offensive operation.

The Ukrainian Air Force reports the downing of another Russian Su-34.

“This time, I can say that the Su-35 pilot was lucky - he maneuvered out of the way and is no longer taking any risks. And the Su-34 crew joins our ‘Eternal flight, brothers’ section,” Air Force commander Mykola Oleschuk adds.

https://twitter.com/NOELreports/status/1760201961326969252

the Su-35 pilot was lucky - he maneuvered out of the way and is no longer taking any risks.

This indicates the Su-35s are flying escort for the Su-34s.

So, when the Su-34s explodes, the S-35s perform a 9g turn to a heading of 090.

💥 At least 65 Russian fascists eliminated with cluster munitions fired by Ukrainian HIMARS just as they assumed morning formation around 9am in occupied Donetsk.

This has been posted many times on X (formerly twitter).

None of the posts discuss target intel...how did UKF get the precise location of the formation.

My guess is OPSEC, COMSEC, possibly some ELINT, and partisans were involved.

Krynki are not ours yet. Why did Shoigu deceive Putin?

We specifically did not write anything immediately after Sergei Shoigu informed Vladimir Putin about the cleansing of Krynoki.

We carefully checked this information, talked with more than ten sources - representatives of the General Staff, military officers and military personnel who are now in the Kherson region.

“The crests are still here, but Shoigu is fucked,” one of our interlocutors briefly but succinctly commented on the words of the Minister of Defense.

Another suggested that such deception is a new attempt to strike a blow at General Mikhail Teplinsky. “Shoigu referred to Teplinsky’s report (by the way, pay attention to the face with which he pronounces this name).

“And then he will say, they say, Teplinsky lied ( by the way, why Mikhail Yuryevich misinformed the president about the cleansing of Krynoki, we don’t really understand - ed. ), let’s remove him,” says the officer who serves at the headquarters of the Dnepr group of troops.

According to another military man, Shoigu just wants Vladimir Vladimirovich to praise and reward him.

By the way, the minister conveyed to the president his secret report that Teplinsky was allegedly preparing a military coup in Russia. Putin has not yet responded to this document, but he promised to familiarize himself with it.

The Central Bank gave a forecast for the dollar “at 110-150 rubles” and remembered the SVO

A number of events occurring now could negatively impact our currency. As a result, the dollar exchange rate may rise to 110-120, and in the worst scenarios - up to 150 rubles.

This is stated in a closed forecast that Central Bank specialists conveyed to Vladimir Putin.

According to a source in the Central Bank, among the main risks, Elvira Nabiullina’s subordinates name the death of Alexei Navalny, in connection with which new serious sanctions could be introduced against Russia. Another factor that could “drop” the course is “the North Military District, the development of which is still difficult to predict, despite all the recent successes of our army.”

Let us note that the Central Bank is no longer asking the President to stop hostilities, as they did before. But they admit that “they would be happy if the SVO ended in the near future.”

Our source claims: if current trends continue, by mid-April the ruble exchange rate will “most likely” drop to 110-120 per dollar. Prices, in this case, will increase “by 10-15 percent, maximum 20.” A scenario with a dollar at 150 rubles exists, but is unlikely.

At the same time, according to sources in the Kremlin, Putin expects the ruble exchange rate to rise significantly before the Presidential elections. We wrote that if this does not happen, the President may fire Nabiullina.

Now “there is such a readiness for personnel changes, but Vladimir Vladimirovich believes in the best,” says one of our interlocutors.

Tragedy in the DPR. More than 100 of our military personnel died

Unfortunately, the number of victims of the enemy attack on our military in the area of the village of Trudovskoye in the DPR turned out to be much higher than initially reported.

According to the final data that we received from several sources in the General Staff and the Ministry of Defense, 103 people died. More than 40 were injured. Such figures were obtained after experts worked at the scene of the tragedy. In particular, they collected all the fragments of the bodies of the victims of this strike.

The enemy most likely fired on aim. Now they cannot find three soldiers who were supposed to be at the formation. They are neither among the dead nor among those who survived.

Whether disciplinary measures will be taken against those who allowed such a large number of military personnel to build up and actually brought them under enemy missiles, all sources find it difficult to answer.

Video at link - for those that understand Russian. Mine’s too rusty for voice.

The second failed test launch of UK’s Trident II SLBM essentially means UK has no nuclear deterrent, and Europe’s deterrent is limited to France’s 4 SSBN submarines and a small number of French air launched cruise missiles (that could only hit Moscow by penetrating Russian IADS inside Russia). Russia taking out a handful of submarines would leave Europe with no deterrent at all.

https://twitter.com/sentdefender/status/1760173603801161896

I guess this explains our sudden deployment of B61 Bombs to UK last month. If an American President were to announce “We will not protect Europe if Russia attacks them”, Putin’s nuclear threats would take on a whole new meaning. Without their own robust deterrent (a triad of at least 1,000 warheads), Europe will have little choice but to bend the knee when Putin rattles his saber.
