OBSERVATION - This following Milei’s taking a sledgehammer to the leftists at Davos is interesting. I suspect it is a fig leaf attempt to fulfill the theme of the group “Restoring confidence”. Observers are noting that attendees are ‘shocked’ to get feed back that the general public opposes their gracious and generous policies.

U.S. mortgage rates fell this week to the lowest since May 2023, Freddie Mac reported Thursday, providing a possible boost to buyer traffic in the housing market.
The average fixed-rate 30-year mortgage fell to 6.60% as of Thursday from 6.66% the week prior, Freddie Mac said in its weekly report on home loan borrowing costs.
OBSERVATION - IMHO, a 0.06% drop is nothing to crow about. New homes are still seen as out of reach for most americans, and that continues to drag the economy down. Lowered home prices and lowered rates (should you have a credit rating suitable to get it) reflect a market trying to move product against massive financial forces that are deterring it.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s investigation into the origins of COVID-19, led by Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Subcommittee on Health Chair Brett Guthrie (R-KY), and Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations Chair Morgan Griffith (R-VA), uncovered that a SARS-CoV-2 sequence was submitted to GenBank, the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) genetic sequence database operated by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), on December 28, 2019—two weeks before the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) first released the virus’s sequence.
The sequence was submitted by Dr. Lili Ren, an accomplished virologist at the Institute of Pathogen Biology of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in Beijing, China, which has ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and People’s Liberation Army. She is also a current subgrantee of non-profit EcoHealth Alliance on the same National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) grant as the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), which has been debarred from receiving NIH grants for ten years for failing to provide laboratory records requested by NIH and for conducting research that “did lead or could lead to health issues or other unacceptable outcomes.”
Dr. Ren’s submission was missing some of the technical (not scientific) information required for publication on GenBank. She was notified by NIH staff on December 31, 2019, that her submission would be deleted without the additional information. Dr. Ren’s sequence is not the first instance of Chinese researchers attempting to delete early SARS-CoV-2 sequences posted to GenBank, but it is the earliest known one.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has confirmed that Dr. Ren’s December 28, 2019, sequence was nearly identical to the sequence later made public by the China CDC on January 10, 2020, which at the time was the first known sequence. China has consistently stated that it published the genetic sequence of SARS-CoV-2 as soon as it was available.
OBSERVATION - More and more confirmation of that which was considered three years ago to be conspiracy theory. It pushes the time line back by two additional weeks and further confirms a Chinese release from a lab (wuhan) of the disease.

Congress sent President Joe Biden a short-term spending bill on Thursday that would avert a looming partial government shutdown and fund federal agencies into March.

JPMorgan Chase & Co., in response to a mounting wave of global cybercrime, reported an uptick in attempts by hackers to breach its systems.
JPMorgan Chase said it is combating approximately 45 billion daily hacking attempts, twice the number from the previous year. Mary Callahan Erdoes, the head of JPMorgan’s asset and wealth management division, revealed the concerning trend during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Bloomberg reported.

Texas is doubling down on its occupation of the park at Eagle’s Pass by installing more fencing
The floating buoy barrier in the Rio Grande River at Eagle Pass, Texas remains in place, at least for now. Thanks to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Governor Abbott was handed a victory Wednesday.
In December the court ruled against Abbott in an order that would have forced him to move the barrier from the river. But on Wednesday, the court granted Abbott’s request for a rehearing of the case with the entire Fifth Circuit instead of the three-judge panel that made the initial call.
The decision means Abbott will get to keep the buoy barrier in the water at least through May when the new hearing is scheduled to be held.

With the end of the Ukraine summer offensive and the ongoing winter mud season, Russia is struggling to gain the initiative on several fronts in easter Ukraine. Russia maintains it attacks to take Adviivka, even in the face of huge losses. Russia continues to launch smaller attacks daily across the front lines.
Russian has been shepherding its stockpile of missiles/drones with the likelihood of attempting to take down the Ukraine power grid as they did winter 2023. This task has become increasingly difficult as Ukraine adds air defense systems and gets better coverage.
The Russian Black Sea fleet is is essentially impotent and hesitant to deploy into now contested waters. In the latest, large missile / drone attack, the Black Sea fleet was noticeably out of action. In the last half of 2023, Ukraine was able to take out about 20% of the fleet.
While Russia has reportedly about 400K of soldiers in the theater, all evidence indicates that they are poorly trained and equipped. Russian forces are increasingly having to rely on 50’s and 60’s vintage tanks, APCs and other vehicles. Russian large assaults continue to be what are referred to as ‘meat’ attacks - throwing large numbers of lightly armed, foot troops at Ukraine defenses in hopes of overwhelming them. These tactics ‘worked’ at Bakhmut but there Russia still had a superiority in artillery support. Concerted efforts by Ukraine to locate and destroy Russian artillery, combined with wear and tear taking systems out and poor/no ammo has generally caused Russia to lose the edge in artillery firepower.
Russian leadership reportedly planning for a long duration conflict, hoping to wear the Ukraine army down and cause European allies to tire of their support - forcing some sort of cease fire and negotiated peace.
Russia is believed to be trying to muster a force for a winter offensive, once the soils freeze up and permit cross country maneuver. Focus of such an offensive has not solidified but the most likely candidate for one front is the continued attempt to eliminate the salient at Adviivka.

The Defund Davos Act, the legislation would specifically block the State Department, USAID, and any other federal agency from providing funding to the (WEF). The U.S. has spent millions on the WEF over the years, something Perry and other GOP lawmakers say needs to end.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Friday that the only peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict included the creation of a Palestinian state, and he suggested this might need to “be imposed from the outside,” without Israel’s agreement.
Borrell, in a speech at the University of Valladolid in Spain, said that without international intervention, the “spiral of hate will continue generation after generation,” according to multiple Spanish media outlets.
“The actors are too opposed to be able to reach an agreement autonomously,” Borrell said. “If everyone is in favor of this solution, the international community will have to impose it.”

Israel to continue search and destroy operations across Gaza. Fighting to continue to be intense in central and S Gaza while N Gaza levels are dropping fast.
The Houthi issue continues to grow. US/allied forces hunting TELS in the Yemeni desert has been good, but you really have to hit their logistics and command to put a real hurt on them. Reports are that some of the critters in the Pentagon realize this, but the biden WH is reluctant to let them go weapons free to stomp the threat out. Continued displayed weakness by the US facilitates boldness by the Houthi to continue their campaign.
On a long term view - a ‘forced’ two state solution would not do anything for a regional peace deal. The radical islamic factions are too dug in and will never quit trying to eliminate Israel as a nation and people - and more moderate arab nations will not come forward to stop them.

European leaders from multiple nations have been out warning their citizens to prepare for an impending war. Even Sweden’s Civil Defense Minister and military Commander-in-Chief are warning that war with Russia is possible. Now NATO countries are coming together for the largest military exercise in decades focusing on a Russian invasion. This sudden shift in attention is startling and could be a forebearer of bad things to come in the next years.
