Trump Calls Suggestions for Secretary of Defense 'A Good List to Start Off With,' for 2nd Term in White House

As we wrote earlier, 2024 GOP presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump gave an interview to syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt on Friday. The interview covered many subjects, including the media attempt in recent days to tie his remarks on immigration to Adolph Hitler, whether Trump would commit to handing over power peacefully if he returns to the White House in 2024, and when he may join the rest of the Republican primary field on the debate stage.

There were also scintillating whispers shared by two sources, reported by Politico, that Trump has been quizzing his inner circle on whether to pick a running mate whose name could spark controversy among his dedicated supporters.

But as I hinted, he spoke with Hewitt about more than those topics. The former president also mulled a short list of potential defense secretaries for his second term in the White House that Hewitt rattled off.

Trump called the suggestions "a good list to start off with." He also added a possible name to the list:

....Trump singled out Christopher Miller, the former Green Beret who served as acting defense secretary for the last two months of Trump’s first term, when asked who he would pick.

Trump told Hewitt, "We had Miller at the end who did a very good job. I thought he was really good. I thought he was very good."

My colleague Streiff wrote about the cacophony of fear-mongering on the Left over the Trump Administration replacing--within 24 hours--not only Secretary of Defense Mark Esper but his chief of staff, the policy chief, and the chief of intelligence in November 2020.

Miller responded positively to Trump dropping his name in connection with the top Pentagon job:

I’m humbled by President Trump’s comments — he was remarkably effective at protecting Americans and advancing our Nation’s interests around the world. I was honored to play a small part. I come from a family of public servants — when asked to serve, we answer the call.

As this is a developing story, RedState will provide more details as they become available.

DeSantis was a JAG. These are non line positions. He doesn’t understand the military. He understands how to file divorce documents for deployed troops. That’s not a military activity.

I don’t understand the hatred for DeSantis. Tell us what you think after Trump picks Nikki Haley for VP. Plus, more swamp critters in line to fill his cabinet - again.
I hoped Trump had learned his lessons last time to consider him fit to take the role again. Kash Patel is the only one I have a very positive opinion about being involved in government.

I don’t like DeSantis because he participated in the sabotage Trump sham primary. Not only but while having a national stage, he did not address the DC gulag (Floridians rotting jail), election security or weaponizing/censorship of govt.

They’re going to blow $2billion on a primary over three years ago.

I won’t tell you about him selecting Haley because it’s not happening. I will tell you DeSantis went from 4/1 to 30/1 to be next POTUS because of a litany of reasons to not like him arose out of the worst campaign in GOP history. He can’t even draw big crowds in Florida any longer.

Thanks so much, 101, now I love him even more.

I like the way he handles himself at interviews too.

“If Trump could get him to sign a loyalty oath...”

For one, politicians don’t ever sign loyalty oaths and it is a contradiction in terms by definition for politicians and DeSantis cannot grasp the concept of loyalty.

Yep, when someone swears to tell the truth in a court of law, no one ever lies. Loyalty oath, if they exist, will be the same.

There’s a grup of you who just need to stop with the Allen West comments for everything. He was a Congressman for exactly 2 years a decade ago and his Heritage Action rating is 70%, roughly Kevin McCarthy territory. Hard pass.

While I agree with your statement mostly, President Trump will have a huge wall, unlike at the border to stop anything and everything that could save this country. It’ll be the same as his first term and maybe even worse. The Republicans and democrats will team up against him due to the threat of exposing their corrupt ways.

I’ll still enthusiastically vote for him but still feel like we’re screwed.

Agree. That would be a very troubling and weak pick. I’d like to see someone like Josh Hawley.

Trump should have kept Whitaker and passed over Barr. I never understood why he had him only temporarily .

I’m going to throw a bucket of cold water on this love fest
There is NO WAY the Left allows Donald Trump to be elected President in 2024. NO WAY.
I’m not saying I won’t vote for him but I’m confident that the election issues from 2020 have not been corrected and the Left will bring new twists to the game as with the Colorado decision of recent note.
