As I write this, the debate between Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis is entering the final stretch, but short of a miracle turnaround, a winner has already emerged. DeSantis has hammered Newsom with facts throughout the night, and to Sean Hannity's credit, he's put up graphics with each question that have helped expose the California governor's continued lies.
Once things end, there will be a lot to cover (and a heck of a lot to fact-check on Newsom's part), but one moment was just too good to not go ahead and share. In it, DeSantis began to recollect a conversation he had with a man who had recently fled Florida from California, noting that his new state was safer, had lower taxes, and was better governed.
Wait until you see who that man was.
I was talking to a fella who had made the move from California to Florida. He was telling me that Florida’s much better governed, safer, better budget, lower taxes.
Then he paused and said ‘by the way, I’m Gavin Newsom’s father-in-law.’ pic.twitter.com/OSsYCRTJYo— Ron DeSantis (@RonDeSantis) December 1, 2023
Holy crap. They could have just cut to black at that point and played a Hannity re-run because DeSantis effectively ended Newsom. It's one thing to nail someone with facts and figures, and that was certainly done. But it's a whole different level to have Newsom's father-in-law used as a source for how much better Florida is than California. I'm pretty sure Christmas dinner is going to be awkward this year.
That's not to say Newsom didn't desperately try to showcase his patented slickness in the debate. Throughout the night, he did his best to use his slimy demeanor to effortlessly spew falsehoods. DeSantis was ready to nail him in nearly every instance, though. The idea that the Florida governor isn't a good debater has been completely dispelled. Perhaps Newsom was too overconfident, believing he could just walk in and dominate, or perhaps being prepped by Nikki Fried (yes, that happened) wasn't the best decision.
Whatever the reason for the lackluster performance, Newsom was on his back foot most of the evening. I suppose not having any facts on his side played a role in that. A politician can only lie so much. At some point, they need something tangible, and what's tangible in California is Newsom's awful governance. He can't hide from it.
Spot On! I, too, am a Trump supporter who was glad to see DeSantis do well.
Spot on, ContraryMary. I saw that “debate” as a warm-up for 2028. I’m afraid these two will repeat this type of performance in 2028 at the end of Trump’s term. Of course, the bloom will likely be off of DeSantis’ political rose by then. Newsome is a swarmy, lying, deceitful, egotistic politician who relies on a supposed “charm” and suave presentation not dissimilar to Bill Clinton. He is to be feared due to the gullibility of the American voter, and the ballot-fixers!

How about Meathead? Will that suffice?
A “debate” no one watched between folks who don’t matter.

The debate showed what DeSantis can do. Trump could learn a few things from the way DeSantis performed — if he can ever learn to cease name calling and personal attacks.
“The debate showed what DeSantis can do. Trump could learn a few things from the way DeSantis performed — if he can ever learn to cease name calling and personal attacks.”
Yes, so a guy who’s BEST polling shows him losing to Trump by more than 2 to 1 can offer lessons on how to WIN to Trump....
DeSantis supporters I am starting to have to mentally classify with the potheads, they just truly live in an alternate reality.
If only Trump would act more like our guy, who’s getting his clock cleaned up and down the hallway, Trump would be so much better.
DeSantis sadly has shot himself in the foot with this idiotic attempt to run this cycle. Forget the fact that he’s a terrible retail politician.. just look at the actual messaging.. “I’m like that guy you really like and want, but better, somehow... but we can’t really articulate how I’m so much better.. but I can win.” What kind of messaging is that? And that’s been this campaigns messaging from the start.
Desantis has done a commendable job as FL Governor, but he’s also done it with an overwhelming GOP led legislature that has let him engage in some HUGELY SWAMPY THINGS.... like changing the laws just so he could run, trying to hide his travel plans... etc etc... Yes, he won re-election by a landslide, but he also was running against Crist! A turncoat who NO ONE WANTED or SUPPORTED. He nearly lost to a corrupt drug addict, and only Trump’s support pulled him over the finish line to be governor in the first place.
Desantis took himself from being, what would almost certainly be a heavy contender if not the front runner in 2028, to basically never ever having a shot at the White House by listening to stupid establishment people and running this term.
Desantis peaked back in January, when he was still an blank page to most Republican voters, since then, the more they see of him the lower he polls. The belief that this guy is going to be able to fight at the national level against a system fully stacked against him is comical. Hell he can’t even stand up to the Cheney money men who have been backing him... every time he utters anything that goes against the establishment narrative, he walks it back faster than hooker drops her panties.
Newsom also made it quite clear that Biden is 100 percent a perfect president in every way.
Still, I have my doubts.
“That guy has to be psychotic, or living in a fantasy world.”
He’s a ‘Young Global Leader’.
DeSantis isn't slick. Anyone who says DeSantis is slick is not telling the truth.
Newsom - he is slick. Haley is slick. Trump can really work the camera too; he has years of experience practicing on national television shows.
And Trump has some really slick zingers. Criticize Trump for embracing BLM and see if you don't get a slick zinger.
DeSantis is not slick.
Probably of no consequence since DeSantis won't be the Republican nominee in 2024 (and probably never because the Trump supporters of 2023 will still be mad at him). Possibly could affect Newsom's chances of replacing Biden on the ticket in 2024...but the Democrats don't have any good alternatives. Whitmer? Pritzker? Some other governor?
There is no doubt in my mind that they will prop up Biden through the convention, then once nominated force him out... then the DNC can name whoever they want as their nominee without a single vote needing to be cast or a primary fight needed.
They changed the rules in 2022 to be able to do this.
So unless Biden croaks before next august then they will just give him the nomination then have him withdraw and name someone else.
He was actually pretty quiet!
It was an arial picture of a grid map of San Franciso streets overlaid with brown indicating what areas are covered with feces. De Santis held up another picture—an illustration from one of the children’s books he is “banning.” It showed naked bodies with the genitals blacked out for the home audience.
Trump isn’t winning any debate. He doesn’t show up. He’s yesterday’s news and he thinks he doesn’t have to work to win the nomination. And recent pictures of him show an old man getting older.
DeSantis was prepared and ready to wipe out Newsome which he did. He showed he could debate a smooth operator because he was equipped with facts and was able to smack Newsome with them. Newsome is the Democrats last hope. He will be their nominee. And if that’s the case, DeSantis showed he could crush him. It was delightful to watch.
Problem I saw DeSantis having was when Newsom said there were more murders in Florida. DeSantis never directly addressed that. I remember DeSantis pointing out how Newsom kept avoiding answering questions, then he did the same when not answering that charge. Anyone know the answer to whether murder rate is higher in Florida?
