Media Industry in Shambles: The Washington Post Cuts Staff, Newspaper Decline Persists, and Vice Faces Workforce Reductions
Citizen Watch Report ^

The media landscape continues to face severe challenges, exemplified by The Washington Post's decision to cut 10% of its staff, indicating a substantial financial loss exceeding $100 million this year. The broader trend is evident as over 25% of all U.S. newspapers (daily and weekly) folded in the past 15 years.

Newspaper advertising revenue mirrored the decline, plummeting by 25% from 2019 to 2020. A noteworthy shift is the fact that 42 out of the 100 largest U.S. newspapers no longer publish on a daily basis. The decline is pervasive across legacy corporate news media, both digital and print, with Vice announcing a 10% reduction in its workforce. This comes on the heels of a substantial downsizing from over 3,000 staffers at its peak to around 1,000, highlighting the ongoing challenges that media outlets face in a changing landscape.

Theoretically, they should be able to offset their circulation decline with internet subscriptions. But I’ve heard few people actually subscribe online.

The newspaper and publishing business is being fundamentally transformed due to technological change.

The last time I saw a Time magazine, in a doctor’s office, it was very thin, and had many pictures and graphs, as opposed to many long articles to read.

“42 out of the 100 largest U.S. newspapers no longer publish on a daily basis”

Nice.

Less leftist propaganda.

They can get to never publishing ever—and then we have a total victory.

I wonder what would happen if a truly respectable, honest, conservative leaning paper would start production? A paper that reported the news, not made it up, nor turned everything into an editorial.

Would the Left let them stay open for 5 min?

You act like the propaganda arm of the DNC you automatically cut your audience in half.

The mere idea that 3,000 people were required to churn out the CraPo's agitprop while Dic Pic was supervising the shipbuilders of his new mega-yacht is hilarious. Katherine Graham is shitting herself in hell. Schadenfreude.

Considering there’s little if any actual journalism these days it makes sense. When supposed news sources just quote, X, Instagram TikTok etc why do you need them?

They’re worthless for the most part.

Epoch Times fits the bill, although they don’t publish too many paper copies.

You just described “hate speech”.

There was a large fire to the south of where I live and I went to the local paper online a handful of times over a couple hour period but no information but when I looked on social media, found out that it was an abandoned house that was destroyed plus people had posted pictures.
