I’ve long wanted to travel there. Kruger, the Drakensburg Mountains, Cape Town, the Voortrek Monument, Isandhlwana, etc.
But the pictures I’ve seen of Joburg make it look really bad there. Cape Town is supposed to be a bloody mess too.
I’d hate to go on vacation and not really be able to leave my hotel in the evening for the fear of being robbed, beaten or killed.

After Rhodesia fell, I am surprised SA held on as long as it did.
Given demographic trends, I fear the US is on the path to a similiar fate except the consequences will be biblical.

Even back in the 1970s & 1980s you could not answer that without saying, “South Africa”. Back then, answering with South Africa was as taboo as the N word. Now, it is an acceptable, respected “nation”. Basically a failed state, but acceptable and respected.
Here in the US they just say “white privilege” and use DEI, CRT, and other racist practices to disenfranchise whites.

We stayed in a suburb called "Sandton"...which has its own writeup in wikipedia. Very affluent...there was a Rolls Royce dealership a couple of hundred yards from our hotel.OTOH,there was an incredible township called "Alexandra" only a few miles from our hotel.We drove past it on the way to Kruger.
Given what I've seen...and what's happened since my last visit...I'd say that SA isn't a great vacation choice.
But if you're willing to take the risk the national parks cannot be equaled. And yes,the countryside is breathtaking!
Apartheid had to go. But South Africa should have been split up into like five different countries. Each tribe would have gotten their nation.
Right now the best thing is for Capetown to become independent.
