Tony Bennett dead at 96 in his hometown of New York

Tony Bennett, the legendary pop, jazz, and big-band vocalist, has died. He was 96.

Publicist Sylvia Weiner confirmed Bennett’s death to the Associated Press, saying he passed away in his hometown of New York. His cause of death — just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday — has not yet been announced.

“I come from good Italian stock — but I’ve tried to stay fit through the years,” Bennett told me nearly 20 years ago.

At the time he was a spry 72, meeting and greeting concertgoers with swagger before a benefit performance in the blazing hot Sonoran Desert of Tucson, Ariz.

For two decades beyond that, the 20-time Grammy winner kept swinging as smoothly as ever — making history as one of the only artists to chart new albums in the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and the first three decades of the 21st century.

RIP Tony

Saw him perform at the Jax Jazz Festival in 2003. Did an almost two hour stint which was captivating. He would have been 75+ and did not miss a beat. Politics aside, he was a legend. BTW, he was also a WWII vet.

Yes. We took my mother in law to see him in Pittsburgh in 1993. Tony was accompanied by a piano player, drummer, and upright bass. He sang one song without using his microphone to show off his pipes. We all really enjoyed the show.

What a stupid and inappropriate thing to post on a thread about a musical icon who just passed. Do better.

The last of the great crooners. Had a LONG career - longer than many lives.

Also had a great sense of humor and poked fun at himself in film and on TV may times.

RIP Tony - your kind will never be seen again.

Tacky attention seeker. I imagine you in mom’s basement frothing at the mouth to see how many people you offended.

As odd as Lady Gaga is, she does have musical talent.

Excellent talent, rapport with fans, and longevity. Can always listen to a Tony Bennett song.

I would doubt that any of the stars of today would be doing their work into their 50’s. Will all be replaced by AI.

San Francisco really isn’t what it used to be.

Didn’t know he was a painter. I very much like the portrait of Louis Armstrong he painted, which was shown in the article.

And he shared the bill with Rosemary Clooney and Artie Shaw. But Bennett was the headliner.
