The mayor of South Fulton, Georgia, was arrested Saturday morning after entering a house he says he mistakenly believed was abandoned.
Khalid Kamau was charged with criminal trespass and burglary in the first degree. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail and was released Saturday night after posting an $11,000 bond.
"I do want to thank the South Fulton police and the staff of officers for their courteous and professional service throughout the day," Kamau told reporters as he left the jail.
The mayor would not speak about the charges when talking to reporters. The City of South Fulton also would not discuss the details of the arrest.
"The City of South Fulton is committed to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their position, are subject to the same fair and just treatment," the City of South Fulton said in a statement. "As the investigation is still ongoing, we are unable to provide further details at this time."
Kamau explained that he was interested in looking at a house he believed was abandoned.
"I just wanted to see the house," Kamau told Fox 5 Atlanta. "I do apologize to the owners. I thought it was abandoned."
Sources told Fox 5 Atlanta that the property owner held Kamau at gunpoint until cops arrived. Police have not confirmed this claim.

Excellent demonstration of the fact that Democrats do not experience embarrassment.
“I thought it was abandoned”
Yeah, uh huh. Good one Mr mayor. Tell us another story.
So now he’s qualified to be Governor!
He should be thanking the homeowner for restraint and not shooting him dead.
Dis some bullsheeeiiitt!! Da systam be racist!!
Term I’ve heard lately is “my side hustle.” I seem to have missed it coming into vogue.
Used to be about a job such as my working at 2 part time jobs and for a few months 3 of them, in college. Now it’s a little more lucrative and little less callus producing.
Part of Merriam Webster:
‘Side hustle’ appears to have entered our language in the 1950s, when it was used to describe both scams and legitimate jobs.
Was it for sale? The maya will need good lawyas.
Another Ahmaud Arbery.
Good thing that he didn’t try to jog over to the homeowner and fight for the gun like Arbry did.
Khalid Kamau was booked into the Fulton County Jail by the early afternoon and released that evening after posting bond. Jail records show he is facing charges of first-degree burglary and criminal trespass.
Note that he was also charged with burglary, which means he was caught trying to steal things from the house.
Socialist mayor of South Fulton, Ga., hopes his arrest for trespassing, burglary will ‘highlight inequities’
No mention in the article he’s a Socialist in the Demoncrat party...
So he’s just a common black thief?
I am always looking for property/houses that look abandoned or in disrepair. When I find one that has potential I research county tax records to find out who the owner is and talk with them before ever entering property to look closer. Sometimes talking to a neighbor will give you insight as to the owner and how to communicate with them. There has been time or two I have walked around the outside without permission just to see if any major damage before contacting the owner. But never have gone inside any building without consent.
This is interesting:

In the wake of his arrest, City of South Fulton councilwoman Natasha Williams-Brown will now be mayor pro tem, 11Alive learned.
South Fulton has had a few cycles of controversy since Kamau took office. In February 2022, he vetoed police bonuses. In June 2022, city officials asked the Fulton County District Attorney to look into Kamau’s credit card use. In July 2022, Kamau asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to investigate the city council for corruption.
Fast forward to 2023, five city council members filed a lawsuit to get Kamau out of office back in March. Later that month, the city manager resigned. In April, the mayor’s Easter egg hunt was shut down. And just last month, an online petition surfaced to de-annex a part of South Fulton, with supporters calling the city government “dysfunctional.”
Keep in mind he was stealing stuff out of it. The owners had cameras which makes me think it’s some sort of Air B&B rental.
They got him for burglary too. I guess he was stealing the TV, etc?
So, if you decide that a certain property somehow demonstrates inequities, THAT somehow makes it OK to break into the property? What planet is this man living on? People who vote for his mindset need to have their heads examined!
