We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

When they read "equal," leftists deliberately ignore the essential qualifier, "created." If you want to make a lefties' head explode, quiz it on why the racists Founders included the word at all.

As the predicate to the argument for self-governance, it's got nothing to do with "equality," whatever that means, and everything to do with the fact that a king is born the same as any other man. It's a sublime denunciation of divine rule, from which all the other arguments flow.
