Jack Smith is reportedly preparing to hit President Trump with 45 additional charges as a ‘backup plan’ should Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, delay or thwart the classified documents case currently in the Southern District of Florida.
The additional charges are expected “in the coming weeks,” The Independent reported.
President Trump was recently indicted on 37 federal counts in a Florida court in Jack Smith’s classified documents case.
According to the latest leak, the special counsel’s prosecutors are preparing a “superseding indictment” – a separate set of charges against Trump in the Southern District of Florida.
Jack Smith’s prosecutors may also bring additional charges against Trump in a different venue if they feel Judge Aileen Cannon is being too fair to Trump.
This is the same theory that corrupt prosecutor Andrew Weissmann recently floated.
Trump was charged with 31 counts of willful retention of national defense information and 6 other process crimes stemming from his conversations with his lawyer.

It obviously appears extremely excessive. The excuse they're hiding behind is "this is the work of the grand jury" who supposedly "is working on new leads and information since the original indictments."
I believe Trump made some mistakes, some serious, but the quantity of charges is absurd, as many of them could and should have been better consolidated, for a variety of reasons.
Best case the current judge throws a large swath of the current batch out. That would lighten the current load quite a bit, and goad Smith into further showing his hand.
Congress needs to act at this point too. Their investigations into "weaponization of government" and "origins of covid" have been complete catastrophes though. They're too busy playing both sides to focus on doing what's actually right.
🤔.......😂
Hasn’t this jerk had 2 previous convictions overturned unanimously bt SCOTUS?
Just add a few zeroes onto the 45. Same difference.
Fascism.
Attention Republican members of the House:
Start gathering evidence of prosecutorial misconduct of Jack Smith. Why didn’t Jack Smith charge Trump with everything that the grand jury agreed? Jack Smith shouldn’t save some charges in reserve in case the Jack Smith doesn’t like the judge’s rulings. That is not how a prosecutor should act. Get all emails, texts, and possible eyewitnesses one needs to prove misconduct.
Judge Cannon needs to call him to her chambers and tell him that.
And after the warning, let him know that still proceeding with it will be contempt of court, with jail.
That’s the legal phrase I was looking for.
Malicious prosecution. It seems so obvious.
Will there be anyone or any entity with enough courage and money to challenge this? I sure hope so.
It’s already gone far enough to resemble actions that took place behind the Iron Curtain or in Red China.
The ONLY reason this continues is Congressional Republicans are spineless.
I would be surprised if they brought a sedition case in Miami. Whatever the violation, part of the charge must have occurred in the district. I think they already tried to move the case to DC which was denied so the jerk needs to bring a separate case in DC. Lastly, the GJ is done with they render an indictment.
If addition info relating to the charges brought is discovered, then there are grounds for a superseding indictment. I don’t see the connection between taking, allegedly, classified document and sedition. Why not throw in mopery in furtherance to climate change too.
Over-charging prejudices juries into thinking: “With all those charges, the defendant must surely be guilty of something.”
That’s a great point.

“I believe Trump made some mistakes, some serious...”
And what might they be?
Has any other president made serious mistakes?
Has Biden made serious mistakes?
I am surprised that you did not say that Trump has flaws.
What would prompt you “believe” Trump has made serious mistakes?
Do you have full knowledge of every decision Trump made or has made?
Trump not realizing they were going to use these documents as a method to entrap him was a mistake, was it not? His excuse to Hannity the other day was that he hasn’t had time to review them, and the documents were mixed in with old shoes and shirts.
Say what? He got a freaking subpoena, that should have been a fire alarm. Yet he was apparently too busy playing golf to worry about it. But you don’t think that was a short sighted mistake, to just leave it up to a couple of young lawyers, and not actually get it resolved himself? The lawyer who singed the affidavit saying all classified had been turned over was a former TV host!
Good Grief!!!
Free Republic, Need to flag today’s posts with a Hazardous to One’s Health Warning!!!
One horrible anti-Trump headline after another.
Thinking I might have to take an extra blood pressure pill to avoid suffering a stroke.
Have mercy!!!
He has been Trump 2.0 lately.
Basically, Smith wants to get his pound of flesh before a sympathetic jury in NY or DC. These additional charges are add ons to fix his Florida problem where he knows Trump will be getting a fair judge and jury and he wants to get a pack of new charges filed in NY or DC where he is guaranteed of a conviction without regard to evidence.
That’s exactly his plan.
