On March 29, 2023, the North Carolina legislature overrode Governor (D) Roy Cooper’s veto, eliminating the unconstitutional state requirement to obtain a permit to purchase a pistol.
The permit system was put into operation in 1919, with a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and racism, during the Woodrow Wilson presidency. It was in place for 103 years. It is a classic example of a statute that effectively chills the exercise of a Constitutionally protected right. To see how effective the statute was in chilling rights protected by the Second Amendment, consider handgun sales, as measured by the NICS system, in April 2022 and April 2023. The Bill, SB41, became law when the veto was overridden on 29 March 2023. The law’s potential chilling effect was removed for the entire month of April, 2023.
If there was a significant chilling effect on the exercise of rights protected by the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights, there should be an increase in handgun sales in April of 2023.
The handgun and long gun sales, as measured by the NICS system, in April of 2022, were:

This is significant proof of an enormous chilling effect on the exercise of rights protected by the Second Amendment.
The total handgun sales in North Carolina were only 22,109 in 2022. After the law was repealed, in one month, handgun sales more than doubled over the entire previous year.
In the Bruen decision, the Supreme Court declared the Second Amendment is not a second-class right.

People no longer have to wait on the sheriff to approve their permit. Some sheriffs, dim-0 sheriffs, would drag their feet on doing their job.
Keep buying Team America. It is getting close to time we may need to use them.
So, I take it, the effect was...chilling?
The Restriction originally gave local sheriffs the ability to keep Black people from buying guns.
The sheriff had to signoff on gun purchases and could restrict purchases by anyone he wanted to.
Folks better make an earnest effort to out-buy the illegal aliens who will be looking to gain arms for the up coming hoedown.. Obama's army will need to be armed.
It's going to be a nation wide arms race....don't be left behind.
“Obama’s army will need to be armed.”
I would bet that weapons caches are all over the USA in ‘abandoned’ warehouses and other innocent looking places. These stand ready to have their inventory passed out to the millions of military aged illegals currently streaming across our border.
If you think that these men are all seeking to become roofers and lawn-care specialists I wonder how you walk and breathe at the same time.
I just picked up a new toy from a pawn shop across the river in the next county. (Ordered online...oh my...got the cheapest deal thru the pawn shop.) The store was on main street of this small town. There was a big sign on the sidewalk out front: “Permit no longer required to purchase a gun! Come on in!”
Oh, I’m in Charlotte.

Unconstitutional? I think you need a permit to buy in NY.
“Take away the infringement, and more people exercise their rights.”
That’s what the liberals are afraid of.
Bttt.

1,655 to 46,040! Wow! That’s some jump!
When you have to ask permission, it is no longer a right.
I’m pretty sure they are referring to the State Constitution. SC Allows State restrictions as long as they don’t violate the Second. Don’t get me wrong I am a strong 2A supporter, but State issues are theirs to adjudicate.
Yep. Reading the reports of similar invaders in the UK and Ireland it’s amazing how often these are recorded with firearms in these theoretically gunless countries.
So very true. But my comment was about the author’s skill. Using the word “chilling” in a rather short article seems excessive.
Exactly my biggest fear, Byte.
Warehouses full of weapons and ammo, uniforms and boots, helmets and body armor, all waiting for the magic “recall phrase” that will bring thousands of Chinese, or Central Americans, or Midde-Easterners, to collect their kit issue. Then they meet their commanders and get their orders and we are screwed on an breathtaking scale.
And our best military units are where? Oh yeah, Germany and Japan and South Korea, but not on our borders. Armed citizens won’t be able to hold the line, especially since we don’t even know our own neighbors by name let alone as fellow militiamen.
Look what one bus-load of suicide terrorists did to us on 9-11. Now multiply that by a few thousand.
‘One Bus Load’...
